No joy for me. Window 8.1 64bit w/media player implemented. IE is my default although I also have Firefox installed. Is that my problem?

Try this:
Okay, I got it. I had to go into control panel -> programs > programs and features -> windows features -> turn media player on.

Win8.1 does not seem to have media player enabled by default.

Code: Select all

You are missing either Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player. These must be installed and enabled.

This should really be spelt out in the Distant World Product Information as a required (just as Directx, XNA, etc).
Not all people like or have IE or WMP installed/enabled.

The need of WMP was on the list for requirements for the previous games. But it seems we forgot to add it to Universe. I will ask to fix this.
Thanks. [:)]

It's kind of an obscure requirement, so maybe the game installer could include some small test program that checks if they are both installed and activated and, if a negative result, suggests a web site with installation/activation instructions?

This issue is still not resolved for ajack58. " That file does not exist in any directory/folder; nor the AppData\Roaming\Code Force Limited\Distant Worlds\1.9.5.0\ folder " I have exactly the same problem. I'd love to post a dumpfile, but there simply is no Code Force Limited folder within \roaming on Windows 7.

Bumping this because I was having the same problem, and Daedalus's suggested solution worked for me. Fix below:
I am sorry to hear you are having trouble. What i need to be able to help you is a post of your DxDiag. Some things to try in the meantime is:

Reinstall the redistributable in this order (which can be located in your games install directory in the folder called Redist): Install .net 4.0 (File name: dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe)
Install Direct X (File Name: DXSETUP.exe)
Install XNA (File Name: xnafx40_redist.msi)
Reboot your computer after this and then try to run the game.

If this does not work please uninstall the game, Make sure any Anti Virus software you may have has been temporarily disabled and rerun the install allowing all the Redistributable software to run as well. Please try the above process first.

Cheers,
Gerry

Note that if you have the steam install, these files are actually in the _CommonRedist folder

Went through the suggested fix regimen; ran Distant worlds Universe\redist\dxsetup fixed the problem. Thanks.
