Indeed AW1Steve [:D]. What Mr Bullwinkle no doubt does not realise is that by January 1942 when she was torpedoed (no doubt due to Mr Bullwinkle's poor captaincy), the Grand Old Lady and her crew had been in the war for over 2-years and, in the finest traditions of the Royal Navy, had put herself in harm's way in the service of her country in Norway, the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic (just as she had done at Jutland over 25 years previously [&o][&o]).
Thanks to our Yankee Allies she was able to have serious damage, incurred in the Med, repaired at Bremerton. Now, ready to return to service once more, Mr Bullwinkle seems to be making something of a pig's ear of getting her back into service. Perhaps someone - a grown up perhaps - who knows this game can help him out? [:)]
She jumped in front of the spread to selflessly sacrifice herself to save that Clemson class destroyer from certain annihilation. [:D]
And it was a net gain.

I fail to see the problem with Warspite, QE or the R class BB's if used correctly.
They certainly lack AA firepower, but would stand toe to toe with any IJN BB except Yamato & Musashi and would be the equal of the US BB's before the SoDak class.
Problem is, this era and the game, provide few chances for a BB heavy surface combat.

JeffK the problem is not with HMS Warspite per se. Bullwinkle is trying to get at me by slagging off this wonderful vessel - yep it's that childish [8|] I tried to keep my response to his original post light-hearted by ignoring the attacks on the great vessel and making up an inability to play the game on his part. But he typically ignores this and ups the ante by failing to be able to separate his disdain for me with attacks on the fighting men of the Royal Navy generally (see post 8).
There are those on the thread that have kept this light-hearted and those that simply do not understand the meaning of fun.
Imagine someone coming on here and slagging off the proud history and wonderful war record of the USS Enterprise and the men that crewed her?
Very sad....

In my games, the old girl has always given yeoman service and has always ended the game alive and well. Countless island garrisons felt the wrath of her guns and more than a few ships have succumbed to her power. The Warspite is one of my favorites.

I've always liked the ship. Wish she was just a tad faster so she could join a CV TF , but she's still faster than most older battleships . Actually I would have liked a squadron of her class. [:)]

Sadly we did not have the money to modernise all 5 ships of the class [:(]. Barham and Malaya thus entered WWII with only a modest upgrade package. Queen Elizabeth and Valiant, being modernised later, received a more modern armament package than the Warspite, but all three were useful additions to the fleet during the war - with that interesting mix of old (hull) and new (superstructure) they looked like sex on a stick too [:)] Only the South Dakotas (mean, moody, mofo's) came close in the looks dept.

I'll take Warspite or any "R" class over the US BBs with their kindergarden experience level!!
Having said that, the Warspite was torpedoed off PH in one of my games too!! She sits being fixed in LA as we speak.

I to just finished Castles of Steel, very very good book. Looking to start his other book Dreadnought. Think Im reading them reverse order....but oh well. Got a feeling however that Dreadnought will be a very slow read
Hi jakla,
you'll find Dreadnought an entirely different read from Castles of Steel! In D, all the warfare is political, & the shots are exchanged in diplomatic exchanges, political speeches published in newspapers, governments directing changes in naval strategy, & internecine warfare in the British/German naval commands. The climax of the book centers on the design & (unbelievably fast) construction of HMS Dreadnought, & her transformative influence on the navies of the world.

In my game vs the AI the Japanese know how important she is -
Warspite has just finished the initial repairs in Seattle and is ready to go back to sea but there are 3 subs lurking off the coast (hexes 208.52, 208.53 and 208.54) waiting for her no doubt.
I have several AMs working the area on ASW and some more DD's coming up from SF & LA, as well as KV
Wetaskiwin earmarked to escort
Warspite to the canal (I may as well try and get her to the rest of the RN in Ceylon).
However I know as soon as she hits open water one of those subs is going to nail her, so for now, her crew are enjoying some extended liberty in the Pacific Northwest.
Cheers,

Thanks for the comparative, jmalter. I enjoyed
Castles of Steel, but don't think that Dreadnought would be my proverbial cup of tea. If I wanted to read about political posturing, who said what in the newspapers and the like, I'd pick up any number of other recent publications on modern warfare.

The parts I recall liking best about Dreadnought were the profiles and interplay between the British Royals, Kaiser Wilhelm, Bismark, and Admirals Fisher & Tirpitz. It basically focuses on the world before WWI, from the late 19th century to literally the moment before the Great War begins, weighing heavily on the naval perspective and of course the effects of HMS Dreadnought and the naval race which followed. I found I liked it more then I thought I would, but if you're picking it up expecting it to be exactly like Castles of Steel you'll probably be disappointed.

I suspect that AirGriff has a bounty out on the Warspite in my game after the drubbing she just gave him. The Warspite is a very nice ship with radar and great starting XP.

I just finished reading "Dreadnough" and "Castles of Steel"
Castles of Steels is a war book, no questions asked...
Dreadnough... not so much, I was expecting a book heavily focused on the development of dreadnought and/ or the dreadnough race.
What I got instead was an interesting book (don't get me wrong, it is a good book), about the key British and German actors from the late 19th century until the start of WW1. So, lots of information about the the Kaiser, his father and grandfather, Bismark, Tirpitz, Von Holstein, Von Bulow, other ministers, Queen Victoria, her sons/ daughters, Gladstone, Chamberlain, Churchill. Fisher, Jellicoe, the list goes on and on.
