If you right click on the hex empty hex, it should display the stacking limit in the upper right corner of the screen. Because of the screen resolution I use, I do not see the entire number but I can see the first 2 digits usually. I would also like to know if there is a hot key to display this information.

Not that I know of. For bases it is displayed in Tracker.

Thanks, hadn't noticed the info on the top bar, this is a big help. Though I agree a hotkey overlay would really make it easier to plan for stacking issues.

Last turn I ordered the DM Thracian to run in and plant its mines at San Fernando and it lead to an exciting series of night engagements with a large Japanese screening force. I had also ordered 4 British PT boats to take up defense at Lingayen and they were caught up in the fighting as well.

All I can say is the Japanese gunners were not on their game this turn as they missed all my ships in the four night engagements (2 vs. the PTs and 2 vs. the Thracian). The only hit scored during the night was a single penetrating hit on DD Samidare by the Thracian though damage appeared to be light.

In the morning the Japanese again attacked the PTs and this time sank 3 of the 4 vessels. The Thracian was back in Bataan by daylight and sported 12 new experience points in night fighting ability. Not at all bad since I fully expected her to be blown to pieces as the turn was unfolding.

Japanese troops land at Kavieng this turn. I have a nice little surprise waiting for them in the form of an SB2U-3 vindicator squadron at Rabaul. I’ve set all search aircraft to scan the area around Kavieng this turn in hopes we’ll get an attack to launch on their ships.

I tried a little surprise on Luzon. I flew the British Torpedo planes from Hong Kong in and hoped I’d get a free shot at the landings in Northern Luzon. Unfortunately my opponent had zeroes flying over the landings and my planes were all splashed. Combat report is FOW. I guess poor experience levels prevented any escorts from showing up.

I got my revenge though. I have sent most of the shipping from Luzon south towards Mindanao due to the fact I’ve got fighter cover down there now. My opponent either had bad escort rolls as well or had his planes range set too far and I splashed 9 Kates from mini KB a few hexes east of Cagayan. (combat report is FOW again according to plane losses reported in the Intel screen)

A nice result so early in game for sure. I still have to worry about his Vals but this should help a few extra ships make it through the gauntlet. At Pearl fires continue to grow but float damage is down a bit on the Phelps.

Another relatively quiet turn today. Japan engages my PT blocking forces at night just west and south of Bataan with a pair of DD’s, but manages to slip through them (no one was hit in the night fights with the PTs) and get to a lone xAKL and sinks it.

When daylight arrives the pair of Japanese DD’s sinks two British PT boats but the US PT boats they then engaged manage to escape damage. Unfortunately they fire all their torpedoes at the DDs and miss so I send them back to the PT pool during turn orders as I have no ability to replace the torpedoes at Manila anymore.

Mini KB moved a bit further south and its Kates find an xAKL and sink her. Next turn will probably be bad as my fleeing ships are just about to leave the range of my southern fighter cover. Though many convoys had weird retreat routes plotted at turn start, so there are probably surface ships somewhere near Davao that are scaring my ships and many want to flee north back towards Manila right now.

Kavieng falls today and no air attacks are launched by my planes so the Japanese ships must have fled. My search planes failed to find anything to shoot at.

Chinese units arrived at Ichang last turn and I launched a shock attack. Unfortunately the base holds so it doesn’t look like the Chinese will get it. There are currently 10 Japanese units reported one hex east of Ichang and they will probably arrive before my units recover enough to attack again.

The Phelps finally managed to get the fires put out and is set to pierside repairs this turn. She’s a mess but she’s afloat.

I’ve come across something that has me worried. The Indian 44th, 45th and 46th Brigades all have device numbers listed like 21100/25700 as you can see in this turns screenshot. And when I click the show unit TO&E button, the units have no elements listed.

Anyone know what is going on here? Since the units have nothing listed for their TO&E’s will these units never draw replacements?

Wake gets invaded today and my opponent brings in several small CL lead task forces to bombard the base. The net result is Wake falls without putting up much of a fight due to massive disruption. The coastal guns did manage a few hits before the bombardments rendered them useless, but all in all Wake was a cakewalk for Japan.

Guam also falls today.

Three fighter sweeps over Manila today shred allied air power. I’m down to about 20-25 working fighters and a similar number of damaged fighters left on Luzon.

I screwed up in China and poorly timed my moves into Sinyang. My intent was to change this corps move orders a turn or two ago to combat mode so it would slow down its advance and delay its entry into the city for a few extra turns so other units could arrive and be set to shock attack on the same turn it entered. But I forgot to change the orders and it charged in alone this turn (the other corp was set to defend orders and is fine).

The result is a lone corps crossed the river northeast of the city and shock attacked alone. The outcome was not pleasant and the corps has about 270 damaged squads and less than 10 undamaged left.

China captures Hwainan this turn. The 48th Corps started with a high level of preparedness for the base and I ordered it to march there on turn one. My opponent set his troops to march to the location the 48th corp started in and last turn I arrived in the city and Japan arrived at the previous hex I had just left. That left two weak defenders in the hex and China gets is first victory of the war. I doubt it’ll hold long but I order it to begin digging in. Hopefully it can reach level 2 forts before Japan can launch its first counter-attack.

We may have a fleet action off Malaya this turn. Recon spotted a Japanese task force 3 hexes from Kuantan and I decided to go ahead and use the British CLs based at Singapore to form a light surface group to send in at full speed and see if my opponent forgot to send heavies with his landing force. Movement is listed as 8/8 and its 8 hexes to Kuantan so I’m hoping it makes it all the way in this turn and doesn’t have to get a little closer and spend a turn at sea first.

Moonlight is down in the 30’s I think, so chances are a night engagement will commence at pretty close range, so even if he has heavies in his screen I should get in close enough to launch some torpedoes so perhaps it’ll even the odds.

I’m really leery about sending in Mauritius with the group, but with PoW and Repulse both in the yards I needed the extra firepower. I spent PPs to give the ship the best commander available, now it’s all up to the dice gods.

Phelps Lives! Allied damage control is awesome!

About the vacant TOE for that unit, I have sometimes had glitches that blot out part of the unit display, like the data was not loaded properly from the hard disk when you called for it.
Mostly this happens with the picture not being loaded for a naval unit or air unit, but could happen with the other data for the unit. The fact that there are some unready squads/devices suggests there is a TOE which is filling out the unit.
To be sure, I would open the game Editor, load the scenario being used and then find the unit by its index number 6452. It should show the TOE in the unit data.

Thanks BBfanboy, I hadn't thought about using the editor to look at the units.

I loaded up the editor and found an entry on each of the three brigades in the unit to load field. Anyone know what that field represents and why it may be affecting the units displayed TO&Es?

Edit: Just realized this unit starts onboard transports, so perhaps that is the convoy. Yep checked, it is the convoy.

When I check the box next to show TO&E in the editor the items in all green fields below that all read 00, so no TO&E in the editor either.

I think being on a convoy inhibits showing TOE - I remember trying to check the TOE of a unit where the main part was loading or unloading on a convoy while the /1 part was still ashore, and could not get a TOE display.
When they were all ashore again the TOE showed normally.

I think the "unit to load" number is the TOE for that point in the game. As the game updates TOEs for upgrades from time to time, it loads a new TOE and changes that number for the unit in-game.
If you look up that number 8427 in the editor you should see the 1941 TOE.

The TOE would probably be the TOE ID of 2691. 8427 should be the TF number it is loaded on at the start of the game.

Yeah that appears to be the problem. The TO&E field is pointing to a blank line in the database. Instead it should be pointing to 2850. My guess is this is an issue for any scenario as the same settings exist in the stock scenario one when I went in and checked it.

Edit:Oops nix that, an all Indian brigade should point to 2846, 2850 is for brigades with a British battalion in the TO&E.

Game restart

We are going to restart our game with an edited BigBabes_C_AEScen028_v14.zip file. I’ve gone in and re-added the Chinese supply changes and uploaded a new .txt file in post #1 above for those who want to try out the mod with a fix for the Indian brigades included. I’ll continue using this thread to post updates for the new game as all discussions about the mod are still relevant.

We are up and running again after a few hiccups with bad passwords which caused even more delay. This time his Pearl strike was a bit less devastating to the ships (2 BBs sunk as before but damage was about 20% lighter overall) but my airforce was shattered. I lost at least twice as many search planes this time and my fleet search abilities will be crippled for months because of it.

Both British heavies ate a few torpedoes, but Repulse seems to have bounced her hits and she’s in good shape and will remain in the DEI for a while to see what mischief she can cause. Prince of Whales has about 30 or so float damage and will be heading to the yards at Cape Town right away as damage this time wasn’t as heavy and she can make 19 knots.

DM Thracian is intercepted mid-ocean south of Hong Kong and fights a duel with two small Japanese DDs. Luckily a torpedo from the Thracian finds its mark causing significant damage to DD Yomogi and the DD sinks as soon as another hit is scored with guns early in the first battle. Japan gets some revenge in the second fight crossing the T and landing several penetrating hits which cause a lot of damage.

Manila is close by but with Japanese air power about to dominate the region I think I’ll send her to Soerabaja after a turn or two spent at the Manila pierside.

I always bomb Canton with the three RN DDs from Hong Kong. HK is guarded by PTs and CD guns. Recon over Canton comes from the Walrus detachment in HK.

I got my navy out of Hong Kong heading south right away. The PT’s went in an escort convoy with some AKs for one turn, this past turn I put them into a PT task force and gave them orders to head for Subic Bay. Thracian was going to lay a minefield at one of the islands in the Philippines at a chokepoint, but got intercepted. The other two DDs are a bit behind the Thracian and will probably intercept the Japanese DD should it remain out where it is.

I sent the small detachment of two float planes to Bataan (had to fly them to an empty base on the north tip of Luzon first turn) and the Torpedo planes used drop tanks and are at Manila now with Naval attack orders.

The 7 plane float group is rebasing through China for duty in Burma eventually. I almost sent it to Wenchow to hunt for unescorted supply convoys but thought better of it as this mod has extra supply and I don’t want to take advantage. In a normal non-modded game I’d probably prefer to use it at Wenchow. I’ll be keeping China for the Chinese until I have a good grasp on the supply consumption numbers I want, I’ll probably even forgo sending any 4E bombers until mid to late 43 to keep supply consumption numbers limited to what China alone uses.

Been a while in game since I last updated. Turnaround time for turns from my opponent has been very slow, so it’s hard to stay engaged in the game enough to want to do a daily AAR.

Not a lot new to report, though there has been some surface naval action lately. There was an inconclusive battle near Kuching around the 14th that saw a surface fleet of four British CL’s engage a surface fleet of 4 Japanese CA’s. The CA’s had just finished sinking all the ships fleeing Manila that fled along the north edge of Borneo, so the action failed in its purposed task to allow some of my ships to get through.

No severe damage was caused to either side, but the British CL’s did take the heavier damage. None of their torpedoes scored any hits which was probably their only chance to seriously hurt the CA’s. The fleet is one day out of Soerabaja now and you can see it at the bottom of this posts screenshot.

Today’s engagement was between a US fleet made up of the CL Marblehead and 5 old DD’s vs. 3 Japanese DD’s which I believe were all Shiratsuyu class DD’s. Japan had been chasing down some of my ships fleeing south from the Mindanao area and they had managed to evade being caught all the way down to the Moluccas. I had sent the Marblehead to the area a turn or so ago in the slim hope my ships would get near enough Ambon to receive an assist and this turn saw an intercept occur right after the Japanese DD’s sank two AKL’s headed to Boela that were preparing to load resources there.

Initially I was delighted to see the battle begin but it started off badly as Japan surprised me and launched a torpedo attack at 8000 yards. Luckily they all missed and the battle then began in earnest the next round. Even though heavily outnumbered, the Japanese DD’s put up a spirited defense and the US ships took more damage than the Japanese. Both sides lost one DD outright and 2 of the remaining US DD’s will need yard time. A few hits were scored on the remaining two Japanese DD’s but it didn’t look to be very significant damage.

All in all I’d say this was a slight US victory as the action saved the AO Trinity and its AM escort (the only ships that survived the run this far south of the Mindanao area). So now the Trinity and its 9k+ cargo load of fuel will unload at Darwin and give that base the ability to do a little refueling as needed.

I should mention that KB moved east from Pearl after the 7th and some of its search aircraft sank a lone AK on the 8th or 9th. One of my subs transiting towards Pearl was detected a day or two later by Japanese carrier planes, so it appears my opponent went on a little fishing expedition between Peal and SF. I haven’t seen hide nor hair of KB since, but to be safe I’ve sent the two US CVs south to take up residence in OZ. I’ve also delayed sending anything to sea, I’ll wait till KB is sighted again before anything leaves the west coast.

In China I’ve been rather aggressive in my openings and have moved on several Japanese bases. Paotow and Kweisui in the far northeast are both being attacked with my units that begin the game out that way. My first attack at Paotow failed and my units are stood down until they build a little more prep for the base and new leaders can be purchased. The units heading to Kweisui had farther to march and won’t all be at the base and ready to attack for another week or two still.

Ichang and Sinyang are both going to be attacked by very large armies. Ichang has about 94k troops at the base now and attacks will begin in a day or two. Sinyang needs another week or so before everyone arrives there.

I had an army (3 corps and an HQ) heading east from Changsha to attack Wuchang, but a Japanese unit appeared on the trail south of Wuchang headed west, so I’m pulling back to the forest hex east of Changsha with that army to prevent having its supply lines cut. I was just one or two days away from entering Wuchang, but if the Japanese get behind my army in strength it is doubtful I’d have the strength to reopen supply lines to the army, so this attack will have to wait until some units from the Ichang area get freed up and can be brought into the Changsha area to help guard non-base hexes around the city.

At Canton I’ve gotten one corp into the three hexes NW, NE and E all heading into Canton now. They should arrive in a few more days. I won’t be attacking but will instead just try and hold in the city until some reserves arrive from the Chungking area to beef up the force.

This particular move has had the added effect of delaying my opponents push on Hong Kong (he’s actually pulled some of his attacking units out of HK back to Canton), which has allowed me to airlift about 2/3rds of the Kowloon brigade out at this point (70 AV saved so far). I intend to save as much of the brigade as I can for use in Burma and shall not use it in China, nor will I allow it to draw any replacements while in China as to not take advantage of the supply mod changes.

I don’t intent or expect most of these attacks in China to see much success. But my hope is with China being such a pushover in games normally, my opponent won’t be prepared for such an aggressive opening and perhaps I can shift him into a defensive mind set in China for at least a little while. That will hopefully buy me enough time to dig some fortress levels at my bases which will then make his first offensive moves a lot tougher than usual. Based on his reaction at Hong Kong I think it might be working.

Looks like a very active and interesting turn is about to unfold.

The situation over the past couple of weeks that lead up to this turns setup is, the YFD-1 Dewey 20 ton ARD dry-dock from Manila has slowly made its way through the islands south of Luzon and finally made a break across open waters in the Sulu sea towards Balikpapan about a week ago. The small task force only makes one or two hexes per turn and was detected about 3-4 days ago and then again a couple days later.

I assembled a surface fleet at Soerabaja made up of the remnants of Force Z and the Asiatic fleet and sent it northeast to escort the Dry-dock. My surface fleet was spotted and attacked by a Japanese sub in the Makassar Straits but the torpedoes missed CL Mauritius and the escorting DDs sank the sub. Worried about the fact I’d been spotted, I sent the fleet heading back towards Soerabaja but changed my mind last turn and sent it back to escort the Dry-dock and this turns screenshot shows the situation.

Japan has two fleets closing on the Dry-dock from the east and north. My surface fleet is now with the Dry-dock and it just made it inside the blue range ring (normal range) for the 18 Marine Corps dive bombers rebased to Balikpapan this turn (they had been at Singkawang).

So this is going to be a very interesting turn I believe. Of course if KB or mini KB is anywhere nearby I’ll probably get slapped hard, but I don’t think I could have set up a better situation for the allies to possibly hurt the empire in 1941.

Japan got lucky and instead of a meeting engagement in the morning phase it reacted to my surface fleet at night and we fought an inconclusive night action. A lucky torpedo hit on a British DD sent her to the bottom, but the rest of the damage is shrugged off for the most part. Boise begins the turn with a few points of flood damage but it’s not enough to discourage me and I send the fleet back to escort duty to get the Dry dock the rest of the way into Java.

If I had to guess I’d say the Japanese CA Maya probably started the turn with about 10 or less flood damage as not many of the hits were penetrating and no hits larger than 6 inch guns were scored. Unfortunately Due to the night action the Japanese fleet moved away from the action and was too far for the Marine dive bombers to attack in the AM phase.

A Japanese fleet with 2 BBs moves into the Cagayan hex and chases off my three PT boats. No one sustains any damage and I order the boats back to Cagayan to attack as I assume this is the prelude to a landing there.

Japan makes his first attempt to throw me out of the Canton urban hex and my three small Chinese Corps make a decent showing for themselves given the fact they are sustaining 3-6 air attacks each turn and have experience and morale in the 30s or so.

Disruption and fatigue is all under 10 for every unit, and I suspect they’ll dig in to level 2 forts soon so I may be able to hold out long enough for the large Corps I have on route from Chunking to arrive. My guess is it’s about week or so out now having just moved out of Kukong along the road. Should it arrive in time it will almost double my base AV in the hex as it’s a very large Corp with over 300 ready squads and a similar number of disabled.

It would be really nice if I could hold out in Canton for at least a few months, as defending the immediate areas around Canton adequately would require far more units be sent to the region.

I did manage to capture Ichang a few turns back, but the multi-week fight to take the city killed well over 1,000 squads and disabled at least 2/3rds of the remaining squads still left in my units. So it’ll be months before the units from the Ichang battle can recover enough disablements to be in decent shape again to an extent they can add to my defenses around Changsha. Right now they have enough good order strength left to manage defending Ichang but that’s about all they can do until they can rest up for an extended period of time.

I ran into a brick wall at Sinyang with its level 4 forts (Japan’s adjusted AV was 10 times its base AV), so my units will simply dig in there and create a strong front that needs to be reduced before Japan can seriously think about a strong move on Changsha.

I had to do the shock attack as several Corps were arriving across a river that turn.

In the far northeast I managed to take the two bases east of Yenan that I attacked, but I don’t expect to hold them long. Japan and China both begin weak in that region and Japan can easily bring in enough stuff to eventually retake the bases. I’ll hold them for as long as I can and then I’ll more than likely go off road and harass his rear areas with the remnants that survive his counter-attacks.
