Haven't updated the AAR in quite some time while the game's in the late September days. Not much happened anyway in early to mid September. All this changed in late September when I decided that I also wanted to have some fun and tried a landing in Milne Bay. Knew this probably was a foolish maneuver beforehand with recon indicating some 15.000 Australians with over 100 guns and 150 AFVs at the base (by the way, is there a way to estimate the AV of a stack using recon info alone?), but went ahead anyway. If anything it could perhaps set the stage for a CV battle under favourable circumstances. So I hoped.
Kidō Butai left Truk in mid-September, first going for a feint against Guadalcanal, trying to draw the American CVs away from the vicinity of Milne Bay. After bombing the airstrip at Lunga Kidō Butai retreated north and then entered the Solomon Sea around 23rd September. In the meantime the invasion fleet left Rabaul with three SNLF units and an army regiment, supported by a bombardment squadron consisting of Kako, Furutaka, Kinugasa and Aoba, along with Kongō and Haruna coming down from Truk. The force landed on 23rd September, but it was a fairly good disaster. While the fleet containing the three SNLFs were disembarking P-39s from Port Moresby hit it pretty hard. Didn't know that P-39s can do significant damage when on naval attack duties.

Three xAKs were sunk and the SNLFs lost all combat value. Instead of having about 200 AV (after invasion losses) on shore only the army regiment was of any use.
If there was some positives gained from that day, it was that the bombardment of Milne Bay apparently robbed the Allies of their eyes above the Solomon Sea. No fleet there had any detection value of them, most importantly of course, Kidō Butai. With the American CVs coming back, Kidō Butai was moved into position to strike them on the 24th September. To bolster the air defense a Daitai of Zeroes equipped with drop tanks provided long range cap over Kidō Butai.
Indeed, on 24th September the expected CV battle happened, with the Japanese having a go at the first strike. However, the weather was pretty bad and the American anti-air proved to be very formidable. In the end all that was achieved was a torpedo and bomb hit on Wasp and a torpedo hit on Washington, despite the Zeroes successfully shielding the Kankō and Kanbaku from the Wildcats. 13 Kanbaku and 6 Kankō were lost, all due to flak fire. Zero losses totaled 24 (14 due to air-to-air, 10 operational), with Kidō Butai losing 14 of them.

When the Americans counterattacked in between the first and second Japanese strikes, Japanese flak proved to be as useless as during Midway, although the Zero cap did a solid job, shooting down 24 of the 26 downed Dauntlesses and 4 of the 6 Avengers. Still, the lack of flak meant that the American bombers were able to put more hits on the Japanese with Kirishima taking a bomb and a torpedo hit, Hiei two bomb and a torpedo hit, Shōkaku a bomb and Zuikaku two bomb hits.

But apparently the Japanese learned from the Midway debacle and the damage on the CVs was contained. Shōkaku's damage was 43 sys, 10 flood (1 major), 27 engine (1 major) and 10 fire. Zuikaku, despite taking two bombs, didn't suffer any fires and had 35 sys, 8 flood and 2 engine damage, none of which were major. The BBs' damage was more serious with Hiei at 24/24 (6 major)/23 (13 major)/0 and Kirishima at 22/29 (23 major)/3/0.
Following this encounter Kidō Butai was withdrawn to Rabaul to refuel, after which it will immediately head to Truk, avoiding possible exposure to B-17 raids. Hiei is left at Rabaul to conduct emeergency repairs before also returning to Truk (and then back to the mainland).
25th September saw another screw-up on my part. Since recon indicated a surface force at Milne Bay a cruiser task force was sent from Rabaul to shield the retreating Kidō Butai. The idea was to dash in and dash out at night at full speed. Should've done this with a waypoint probably, but since I used destination the force was picked up by American airstrikes. No ship was critically hit, but Takao and Kinugasa will have to return to Japan for repairs.

But the day also saw some positive results for the IJN. On the way back Wasp was hit by a torpedo from I-2 and was reported to be heavily damaged. Later that day I-7 put three fish into Canberra and I-121 a torpedo into Fletcher.
The target of the next few turns will be trying to get as many troops off Milne Bay as possible, using fast transport task forces. In a first step two task forces are dispatched to get two of the beaten up SNLFs back to Rabaul. A cruiser force will provide protection. Kidō Butai will hopefully be safely back at Truk by 30th September (two four DD ASW squadrons are accompanying Kidō Butai back to Truk), where I hope that Akashi can handle the damage of Shōkaku and spare the trip back to Japan. In any case, the CVs need about two months repair time before they can head out again.
