Oh my gosh! I will never get used to all these newfangled acronyms these kids use these days. I hate them. I always spell everything out. It's part of my OCD. Oops, I guess I don't spell EVERYTHING! [;)]

Isn't there some kind of engaged status for units in adjacent hexes in game (especially once they’ve traded some shots)? Units should not be able to side-step and skirt around another unit like this while under fire. At a minimum there should be a massive modifier to the defenders shots as the unit tries to disengage and then re-engage all while within point blank range of enemy musket fire.

once a few shots and rounds have gone in, their morale drops enough for you to just do the moves without the penalty being to much, if i move both behind i can't fully still engage, but moving one slightly to the flank while still using a focus point or 2 helps, plus when also my guns engages it just tips the scales, i didn't want the fort / defences, or the men in it, but was a bonus to have them out, i was after the guns behind, and just used the men in the defence to get to it tbh.

kind of a faint or bluff, attacking one to bypass to a better target, doesn't always work either.

Just was lucky.
