IJ doesn't have any of those ... we get Netties, that's it. And not nearly enough to do both patrol and ASW. So, we're stuck with FP's on ASW ...

The IJN is limited, but like AW1 suggests, why not make this a new-found role for the IJA?

I know, but it seems so wrong. Plus, truthfully, I never have enough IJA bomber groups. I can't commit them to Naval until much later in the game.
So, I use FP's. And yes, I do hate it when the 60kg bombs bounce. [;)]

The best IJA maritime medium range ASW/NavSearch aircraft in decent numbers are probably the Sallys (You need all your Mavis and Emilys on LR patrol)

But on PDU-off, you have a trade off between using them for ground support (which you need) and using them for Patrol (which you need as well)

That wasn't my intention. You also have Sally's and other aircraft you can use. And Jake's I find make excellent "mini" MPA aircraft. I'm not saying you can't do it , but you might look at what you have , and see what can substitute . When I play the allies , early on the USN has very , very few PBY's. So I use Hudson iii's , LB-30's and B-18's. They are not PBY's , or Privateers , but they are what I have. Surely the INJ and IJA have something you can use? I'm talking doctrine , not airframes. As for airframes I try to make do with what I have - Ki32 and Ki30s make reasonably ok ASW stuff, 250 KG bomb does the trick and if you place in them choke pıoints such as makassar and balikpapan they do satisfactorily. e16 paul is a also nice addition with decent legs and a single 250 kg bıomb but arrives to late in the war.

Jury is still out for the MAD device in this game for me, I experimented and saw little or no difference....

Speaking of spotting. How do you guys employ ASW TFs in connection with FPs? I've seen several references of getting ASW TFs in the search area and make them react to subs spotted by airsearch. But I seem to not be able to set this up myself. Daysearch/nightsearch + ASW TFs on React 6. I have spottings from the air but no surface reactions at all.

I set my ASW TFs to patrol a pattern in the vicinity of the air located subs and vector them to the spotted hex for the start of a new pattern sometimes a one hex pattern.

If the sub stays put they will likely find it. If it moves they will likely react to the move.

I have seen ASW TFs react to a sub up to three hexes away but never further.

Not stating that is a limit, just what I have experienced.

I have had torpedo laden FPs sortie from them while underway.

All true. But do you really want to risk such valuable ships as "torpedo magnets"? If you are really that worried about subs , send a ASW group to scout ahead. The VP points all together are less than a tender and it's planes , they have a decent chance of killing the sub , and gives you plenty of warning to get the convoy out of the way. I kind of see a tender as a floating PBY base. People here are trying to use it as a small CV. But CVE's were not used to accompany a convoy but as a hunter killer group , well OUTSIDE of a sub's area. AS Rear Admiral Dan Gallery once said (and he knew a little bit about hunting subs with a CVE, he captured the U-505) "A carrier in the middle of a sub hunt in like a little old lady in a barroom brawl. She's got no business being there". [:D]

No change, but the IJN gets AV's that have both support and a little bit of operational capability. Been that way since release.

Exactly. Air ASW, particularly for IJ, is there to find the sub. Raise the DL so that ASW TF's can prosecute. At least that is how I do it. Get a DL on a sub over 3 and you have a dead sub fast, even with the miserable IJN assets.

Some Japanese AVs go really well with Tonan Whalers, the AO Support fleet for the KB, etc...

I agree. Wasn't advocating the proposed use, simply outlining the few Allied AVs that have a capacity to operate FPs while underway.
