With the Christmas holiday started/about to start, three things:

a) Happy Christmas to my fellow forumites and gamers

b) Is anyone expecting to be getting anything interesting in the games/books/DVD department of a military nature?

c) What have been the best purchases in any of those categories this year?

Yes, A very Merry Christmas and Holiday season to all.

Recently bought Battle of the Bulge on sale. Not a bad $10 game. A decent change of pace from more complicated games. I am considering something more challenging though. I am looking at the new Tiller game, Battles of Normandy. Looks pretty interesting. Too bad we did not get to have a TOAW Christmas[:(]

Merry Christmas guys and a Happy New Year filled with good things... especially good health!

It will just be me and the dogs in the desert with howling winds and hopefully three inches of snow come morning. Bought a turkey and the dogs and I will have a feast :)

Best purchase? A new power inverter after mine blew up last month. Will be paying my daughter back for it for awhile so there goes the game budget for the foreseeable future. I had really hoped to get MWiF this Christmas, but there is always next year if I survive the winter. I've been sick for the last month with chronic lung congestion plus some strained muscles from cutting firewood. My dogs are keeping me nice and warm though, even when the fire has died and the house is at 50 degrees. My big Retriever is always sprawled on top of me by dawn, I wake with my face buried in his fur. Blaze and Ember are curled up at my feet. I'm surviving and comfortable so far. Had a bought of extreme temps that froze and burst some pipes but I got that fixed and water restored. The new Outback Inverter has finally solved my power problems and I'm ready to face a January with three weeks of extended rain and cloudy weather predicted (got that bad news a little while ago). Still, after a year of major problems my ranch is 100% operational at the moment, well stocked with food for me and the critters and I'm ready to ride out the winter!

Hopefully there will still be some sun so that I can run the computer without expending a lot of expensive propane running the generator to charge up the batteries.

So, after all that whining, best of luck to everyone and let's resolve to be here next Christmas eve... happy and healthy [:)]

Happy Christmas to you, ALL matrix gamers and Matrix Staff

b) Is anyone expecting to be getting anything interesting in the games/books/DVD department of a military nature?

Usually get a couple of books based on Military History, will know later on today if that continues

Edit got three books: Anthony Beevor D-Day The Battle for Normandy, Leo Barron Patton at the battle of the bulge and John C McManus September Hope

c) What have been the best purchases in any of those categories this year?

2 Books really enjoyed from last Christmas: With the Old Breed and Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. Just bought a bunch of games from Matrix and based on the manual I think I will be spending a fair amount of time with DC Barbarossa this coming year

Merry Christmas.
Got a new HP 23" all-in-one computer three weeks ago. Windows 10. Replacing a five-year old Dell. Love it.
Reading SPQR by Mary Beard. It is very recent and covers the history of Rome from its beginnings until 212 AD, when Caracalla gave Roman citizenship to all free inhabitants of the empire. I am about halfway through. Very good and readable.
Best new games. I'm not sure. Barbarossa. I'm playing a game right now. Wars of Napoleon. Bought it but haven't played yet. WITW Torch. Flashpoint Campaigns Red Storm Germany Reforged. Too many games, not enough time.
CD. Last thing I bought was Rhiannon Giddens. Tomorrow is My Turn. Her music might be called Americana, American folk influenced.
I had cataract surgery recently, one eye in November, the other eye Monday. I can see like when I was 19. Truly amazing. Not only fixed the cataracts but corrected very poor vision in one eye. I can also actually see the road when driving at night now.

Getting cataracts was the best thing that ever happened to me! Got 20/20 vision for the first time in my life [:)]

Definitely a great Christmas present!

My Christmas present was the demise of my backup generator. Blew out the top seals and oil is everywhere :P

Now I'm back to not being able to pump water. No more games for me for the next 5 years :(

Sorry to hear that, Rhonda. Do you have a Plan B if things don't work out well at your ranch?

Nope! I can manage and have overcome all the adversity that I have faced!

Plan "D" is dying out here though.

Sadly this will be a Christmas not forgotten.

After visiting our daughters house on Christmas day we retreated to our cabin to enjoy the weekend together with just me, the missus and our 4 Boston Terriers. After arriving and opening some modest heartfelt gifts I took the dogs out to chase the ball as they always do. After throwing the ball at 8:50 pm on Christmas night I witnessed my alpha male dog run headlong into a tree at full speed. He had been running across the yard for several years but must have had his attention on the ball because he never slowed a bit. He hit it and didnt even cry out. As he laid there unconscious I yelled for my wife who came running. He died right there as I tried CPR and my wife screaming to the sky. It was my wife's closest dog and needless to say Ive spent the last 27 hours trying to hold my wife and myself together. To not much avail. What started out as the best Christmas in years has turned into a nightmare where I just cant shake what should have and what shouldnt have been.

Dug a hole last night underneath the Persimmon tree that took him away from us and have been listening to heavy rain for the last 20 hours. In the morning we will pack up and leave, minus a huge part of our family. I don't look forward to that. He was with us for 7 years almost to the day.

r.i.p Gunner.

A heartbroken mo reb
