How sentry worked was that any non CP ship put in Sentry, and still at sea at the end of the turn; automatically was flagged to Stay at Sea and dropped down of 1 box (unless it was at the 0 box, in that case was forced to return to base; or it was loaded with a land / air unit).

That spared much time as CW, Japan and in general anyone wanting to have some units on Escort Duty moved them at sea, put them in Sentry, and they were good to go already without having to check sea by sea at the end of the turn. (And that was how it worked til 2 patches ago!)

Currently, a ship at the 4 sea box, placed in Sentry, at the end of the turn does not return to base AND stays at the 4 sea box - so it's already at the 4 sea box at the beginning of the next turn (which should not be happening).

I understand and agree with why you do this. I'll look into the bug.

So far I've spent 5 days trying to figure out why in NetPlay, the Creation of Vichy France causes the Axis computer to 'freeze'.[:@][:@][:@] Only the Selectable units box works - the rest of the forms (including the Main form) are completely unresponsive.

I kind of like this "new rule"

By allowing ships to stay at sea in their current box, it prevents the absolute screwing that can occur when one side gets a double-turn. That is, goes last, and then goes first. For example, one side goes into a sea zone and works over the other sides convoys. Then end of turn, and combatants return to base. Next turn, aggressor side goes to the same sea zone and really works over the same convoy system that is now bereft of surface ships.

Now I'm not talking about the typical light ships in the 0 box, covered by light ships in the 1 box, that provide protection against limited sub attacks. I'm talking about that AND some heavy ships in the 3/4 box to help protect against large surface fleets from entering the sea zone and doing 10+kills on convoys! This can happen before the defending side can re-enforce the zone--resulting in devastating loss of economic output and corresponding gearing. Specific zones include:

CW:

North Atlantic
Bay of Biscay

Japan:

China Sea
S. China Sea.

By allowing ships to remain in their box, they can at least dish out damage even if out-gunned.

I don't see a down side to this because fleets that remain at sea would really limit their mobility. So, they could slide down the sea boxes in their current sea zone during the next turn, or return to base, have HQ's (and others) flip them again, and return to sea. Both seem fair consequences in exchange for preventing catastrophic convoy losses (and economic losses) to CW or JPN....

It certainly sounds fine for the purposes you give. Unfortunately, or not, the rules specify otherwise and MWiF is supposed to enforce the rules.

He and his lovely wife don't drink. I told him that that's very sensible, and if I'd done something similar for the last 25 or so years I'd be in a significantly better financial position [:'(]

Well, as I said, Steve and his wife don't drink but I grew up in Northern Tasmania where Boags beer (from that ad) is the local drop. We do have very clean water here because the precipitation mainly comes from the West off the Southern Ocean and the nearest land at our latitude is the bottom of South America, about 20,000 kilometres away. As a result, our beers tend to be very clean tasting and quite good. I've certainly taste-tested enough of the stuff [:'(]

In the South, where I live now, Cascade is the traditional beer, with the brewery opening in 1832. It's all changed now but years ago if, in a pub, you asked for a Cascade in the North or a Boags in the South, the piano player would stop and everybody would turn and stare at you, Wild West style [;)] OK, there wasn't really a piano player.

There are also many artisan brewers now but I make my own beer. It's fun, organic and saves money.
