I'm sure in large part my views come from being limited to Solitaire, but I LOVE the idea of slowing down the Axis, especially the first year before General Weather has his say. A few well placed Forts (with INF on them) can really help put the brakes on the blitzkrieg. Assuming they are placed well, far enough back to be at a point where the Axis supply line will be stretched, and integrated into a line including cities and natural defense points.
For example, a REALLY lucky Axis getting in range of Moscow might have to go through a series of fortified defensive lines before getting to try for a death blow to the capital of Communism - and this delay might be the deciding factor.
It seems like it was the case historically, and I like the option now that I've tried it. Admittedly, I've only tried this once - Solitaire - but it seems to hold promise.
