Definitely off the hook! I used to play Divided Ground years ago and I like Middle East even better. Keep up the great work! Campaign Series remains my favorite game family since it appeared with West Front/East Front back in the 90's!
Thanks Again!

I am congoo but forgot password and had some problems with merging accounts with slitherine and have ended up with new username.
Hi berto
Could i try out that
debug.exe have tried new
update.
I did fresh install from
disk then updated.
Still same problem go to
save and then it crashes
when i push save button.
I know some graphics bmp
do not load and i have
swapped them. For instance
the brown trees dont load
so i just renamed some
green trees bmp to
browntrees bmp and they
then loaded/worked.I
wonder whether this is all
it is just bmp not loading
and if all are re edited
by me it will all work.my
theory is that some bmp
have effects, shades,
colors that my graphics card/
drivers can not handle.i
hope this is all it is
anyway. If i have to re
edit a load of bmp so be
it i dont care its a great
game and well worth it.
thanks
i have made enougher mistake have installed the new update not the bete one.does this matter?
and where can i get the update beta. Link has been removed and i havent got thst one i was thinking i was waited for the real/not beta update.

Yes, definitely sounds like something isn't right.
Are you installing the game in the default location?
Are you adding the 1.02 UPDATE to that install (nothing else?)

Also, make sure that any save files are going inside the middle east folders. If they are going into "My Documents" or something, the game will crash.

Have done it right then double checked. Fresh install from 1.00 did not alter directory.Save location is correct inside middle east folder.I have been experimenting by installing version 1.00 and the 2.00.Then putting files from version 1.00 into 2.00 .The idea is to find when the save error is triggered.i know its crude but its the kind of thing i can do and enjoy doing.i put all version 1.00 graphics folder into 2.00 and it still fired up but still save error.then data and oobs and it still worked well it started i suspect it wouldnt work properly, however that wasnt my aim.the save error still there.
I then reinstalled 2.00 and just changed Me.exe using version 1.00 Me.exe instead bingo that changed it and the save error wasnt there any more. theres still the error i get from version 1.00 but that doesnt seem to stop me saving and reloading and playing.
i have only just discovered this me.exe idea and have found upon opening some scenarios this error message
me.exe error id 1000 film.cpp line 415 filemenu newscenario error reading scenario file
but other senarios open.its defiantly a improvement.
thanks

With the 1.02 Update out, we can proceed with this again.
Please
[*]Uninstall the game.
[*]In Windows Explorer, verify that the game folder is entirely removed.
[*]Reinstall the game, v1.00.
[*]Patch up to v1.02.
[*]Ensure that the logs folder is empty.
[*]Launch the game.
At the point just after you can't load a scenario, or save a file, zip up the entire contents (all .log files) of your logs folder then make the .zip file available to us. Preferably by uploading here at the forum, else sending it via e-mail. (If you don't know how to do either, just ask.)
Don't do anything fancy. Please just follow the standard install steps as described above.

In the files you supplied
[*]I see no error.log.
[*]I see no ERROR entries in the supplied engine.log.
[*]The very last line in your engine.log says: "2016-07-05 23:25:38 me.exe: [TRACE ID 1100] (filem.cpp, line 742, FileMenu::OnFileSaveAs()) entering FileMenu::OnFileSaveAs()".

At the point just after you can't load a scenario, or save a file, zip up the entire contents (all .log files) of your logs folder then make the .zip file available to us.
At just that very point, what was the issue? Can't load a scenario file? Can't save a file?
I am puzzled why, if there was an error (and that would be?), there is no error.log, and no ERROR entry in your engine.log. Your engine.log indicates you were at the point of doing a FileSaveAs, then ...
what happened?

Hi Berto, I installed the 1.02 update into my XP system and got the same error again just like Congoo. I'll try and zip up the log files and send them to you so we can see what is happening.

So i start game open scenario move about a bit then click "save as"
click ok then you get the picture in "pic2" and the game then automatically closes.I can play again but i can not replay the save.
"pic1"is just me opening the "save as" tab.
A side note if i leave the save file the one that is 0 bytes and doesnt work in the save folder when i go to open the the "resume saved game" tab the game no longer responds atall and has to be shut from the task manager.
thanks
On a side note "pic3" is of me putting me.exe from version middle east1.00 in the directory of version 1.02. However the difference is there is a error message but it saves the file the game doesn,t close and i can replay that save.
it changed when the beta,s started so the first beta is when i could no longer save the game.
thanks

In case you need them, here are the logs from CSME on my XP system. They are from a clean install of the game updated to 1.02. Hopefully they can help!

Thanks. But I can see for myself that the default logging (i.e., what you ordinary players have) will not reveal anything. I will have to ratchet up the logging verbosity on my test XP system here in order to diagnose this.

I have identified the XP issues. I'm working on some fixes.
CSME 1.02xp 20160720 release
Posted: Wed Jul 20, 2016 5:20 pm
by berto
For XP users only, try downloading the attached Middle East 1.02xp 20160720.zip. Unzip, and install (perhaps as a JSGME mod), replacing the official 1.02 EXEs.
The new me.exe should fix your File Save/Save As problems. (Any File Open issues too.)
Late testing indicates still unfixed issues with the game editors. They will likely not work properly for you ("you" meaning: XP users). You can play the standard scenarios, but you will not be able to edit your own (or make new maps, or edit OOBs, etc.). We will not take the time to fix these other non game engine issues now, or any time soon.
ORIGINAL: berto
We're off the hook, because Windows XP is no longer a supported platform, right? [;)] [:'(]
Despite our being under no obligation, out of the goodness of my heart [;)], I have devoted the time to fixing the game engine File Save etc. issues. (Not just out of the goodness of my heart. I discovered that the game install on my Linux netbook has the same issues as XP. So it impacts me too!)
So what was the problem? It's that, under Windows XP (and Linux Wine), every visit to the File Open/Save/Save As dialog changes the game's (or editor's) current working directory to the saves directory, or the scenarios directory, or whatever.
And leaves it there. This subsequently breaks all logging, because the *.log file paths are specified as relative (to the initial launch directory). If the game (or editor) thinks the current working directory is saves or scenarios etc., it can't find
saves/logs/engine.log or
scenarios/logs/engine.log (or whatever). So would crash the game (or the editor).
The fixes were two:
[*]For the *.log files, specify them as absolute path names, not as relative paths (relative to the, supposed, base game directory).
[*]After every visit to File Open/Save/Save As, force a _chdir() back to the base game directory. (Because if not, XP will leave it in the wrong place!

)
XP is showing all kinds of screwy behavior relating to file and directory paths. Things were working on XP before; now they are broken. Why this is so, I couldn't say. I don't intend to dig any deeper to find out. Unsupported OS, remember?
But at least you should be able to play the game, even if you can't edit it.
Note:
This all applies to XP users only. Everybody else can ignore this, and continue to use the official, standard CS:ME 1.02 as before.

Hi Berto,
I unzipped the new exe group into JSGME and enabled them. The game works smoothly now. The editors don't function as you mentioned but the game plays!
Thanks for your dedication in finding the solution!
