downloading mods atm, many of which have altered my views of the game, FXAA EXTREME PC SETTINGS, and underwater mod for ships only atm, but there are a few more i'm looking at also, plus news on the update front, next patch seems so far to be the one to wait for it seems for the pc version anyway, as first 2 where only bug fixes, 3rd one is more content as well[&o]

Not every planet is a lush garden filled with amazing creatures, blue oceans and visual wonders. However, every time you first drop out of orbit on a new planet...that's the prospect. Survive, explore, enjoy.

well now down to 13,921 playing, with (50,908 reviews) mostly mixed, so each to there own i guess, i'm not knocking it either, as i've bought it so want it to get better, mods for me are really good and atm while i wait for the next update they will shine the stuff i need

Glad I waited on this one. Sounds boring. Last thing we need is another repetitive game experience or grind your life away.

I began the game gradually, playing just half an hour or so at a time because the early play seemed a bit tedious, but I stuck at it and am now thoroughly enjoying the planetary exploration, mainly concentrating on exploring monoliths and ruins, trying to work out why the Geks have changed from the xenophobic invaders described in their early history to the polite, friendly, cute creatures I am meeting at their settlements. If I don't enjoy exploring at some particular planet because of it's local conditions then it's easy to fly off to a different planet that suits me better. I haven't got to grips with space flight and combat yet but that's probably due to my relative lack of practice at it. I expect it will come.
No game could ever live up to the stratospheric expectations that many people had of NMS, especially when so many seemed to have their own ideas of what a game they had never seen would actually be about.

Let me just say, it does not matter to me. I thought about buying it and then did not. Part of the whole "I like to talk myself out of paying full price for computer games after years of being burned".

I like the exploration and first discovery aspect of the game. But some reviewers and players say that wears off soon and the game becomes a bit fa grind - I'll probably get it - eventually. But nowadays I tend to wait to the game is on sale before buying. By that stage the game should be debugged (mostly) and the discounts can be huge.

I'm currently enjoying No Man's Sky. But as an old StarFlight II lover, I'm imagining what this game
could of been (or could be) if it mixed/added elements of the Universal Combat/BattleCruiser Series.
I'm wondering if this was the direction and vision that Derek Smart had?

I can't imagine that anyone looking for WoW in space or NMS/Total War could have missed watching hours of Youtube interviews where Sean Murray said pretty clearly that the game was not that but instead survival/exploration. The play throughs by fans at conventions reinforced this totally. IMHO, a lot of players bought the game and simply found out that it was too challenging to play. I spent an hour scouring a planet for the last undiscovered creature and I haven't found it yet. Getting the second and third Atlas passes is also tricky. It's a grind to either buy a really large ship or hunt down a crashed one to repair. My grandson loved the game, but when he started shooting everything "just for fun" he promptly got his character slain by sentinels and lost most of his gains.
In other open ended games, you go into a location, slay some baddies, kill a Boss and collect some loot. Sooner or later, you've done all the locations. Now the baddies spawn so that you can redo this location. The thing is it's the same location. This is never the case in NMS and the locations are the payoff. If you're not standing on a planet with an incredible vista, then blast off and go to another one. I've spent hours where my character was just swimming in the oceans. Last night, I saw some fish come ashore, turn tail up and start digging into the sand with their heads, presumably to lay eggs. Incredible stuff! If you can't hack it, then get a refund and have a nice (quiet) day.

I followed the build up to the game for some time. There were quite a few web sites, many of them dedicated to the PS4, that managed to extrapolate half or even a full page of speculation from the latest of the relatively sparse tweets from Sean Murray. Several of them were followed by a list of comments from people discussing how they would totally ignore the fact that they were being told that the game was single player only and would somehow force the game into a multiplayer mode even though it doesn't exist.

i was very interested in NMS, and read the prerelease descriptions listened to what Hello Games were saying that the universe would have factions vying for territory in it, that you could join in a battle between to factions etc - all of this interested me, to think a game could be exploration and also have dynamic things going on, but it seems none of this made it to the final game? and i have watched enough play throughs now of people not being challenged but just bored
regarding the exploration aspect i like that too, but so far as i can tell there is nothing to learn or document about the varieties of life one finds is there, they dont interact with each other, there is no simulated web of life or ecology occurring is there,
i hope that more is added to it for now, i am not bothered by whatever the game is or isnt atm, i will just give it miss for now and am having fun playing Empyrion Galactic Survival

empyrion is still in EA but its stable and has alot of content already and has fully deformable planets, lots of alien creatures good and bad, and also so far as i an tell, also enemy factions - i think it is smart in just focussing on building a smaller manageable sized universe rather than just some pointless quintillion of planets just all varying on the same assets
the types of ships people have made are amazing - and you can get the templates for them from the workshop so in all i am having fun with it building my home base, stocking its ammo boxs for its gun turrets and stocking the fridge, before building a ship and going into space. Also there is no limit on how high or low you can go in relation to the terrain - i believe that in NMS the game does not let you fly below a certain minimum altitude, i presume it just auto lands or something
I do like open world/sandbox space sims and in looking for alternatives to nms there are alot reeally:

Parkan 2
Unnatural Selection
- some of these are quite old and are not at exploration games but i like the old games alot
