That's a really odd thing to get worked up about.

I would not get worked up about it if WITPAE players did not keep bringing it up as evidence of the supposed superiority of the game. Personally, I don't see it.

I think it's hard to deny this is one of the more active forums on here, but lets stop talking about it and move on.

It has something to do with the game, yes, but mostly it's the friendliness of THIS perticular forum....GP

OK, It has a lot to do with WITPAE, but also a lot of good people.

I don’t play WIF but I would give it a try. It looks like it would be an O.K. game.
Someone with average intelligence and a lot of time to devote to them could learn and play both.

However………AE is my true love.

“AE doesn't use counters. I hate counters. Some people love them. I don't.”……..The Moose.

I agree with the Moose on this.
With modern computer technology there is no reason for pseudo-cardboard counters to exist.
Worse to see them stacked up like cardboard on a computer screen. Stupid.

The same with hexes but I can live with that if I must.

I kind of understand where you're coming from, there's much OT around here, but... there's sooo much interesting information posted by some very knowledgeable people, I'm glad about it much more than I'd be about dead forum strictly about the game.
Also active forum means you can actually get help.

Hi Trugrit

Just for the avoidance of doubt - the reasoning with MWIF was not "stupid" (although I accept if you don't like counters it may seem to be! [;)]). The aim for MWIF was to provide an accurate and faithful reproduction of the WIF board game (with a few changes, the most important being the full map of the globe) and not to 'modernise' it for the computer (other than the obvious benefits of the 'paperwork' being taken care of). That being the case, the hexes and counters had to be a feature of the game MWIF.

Maybe I should clarify. I don’t hate cardboard counters.
I just don’t like computer generated fake cardboard counters.

I like real cardboard counters for board games. I used them throughout the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and
Still use them if I play a board game. Most of my life has been spent in the 20th century.

Cardboard counters look the way they do to facilitate physical contact.
Large numbers on them so they are easy to see.
Square so they will be easier to pick up with your fingers.

To make a computer game look like a board game they have to “dumb down” the graphics.
Graphics are important to me and I don’t want to relive the 1970’s with stacks of fake computer generated cardboard.
With computers we should be beyond that by now.

I’m O.K. with real cardboard.

There are worse graphics than counters in computer games, like having little plastic toy soldiers
Standing around on a computer screen makes me want to puke.

I don't want to get into it with the moose which is why I changed my above post to a legitimate question I have. I just thought his comments about Steve and his health were a little, well snarky. Do I wish Matrix Games would pony up and get him some help completing the game MATRIX promised at the price MATRIX decided to charge-- yes I do. Then implement the AI so many AIs have begged for incessantly. However apparently they have made a calculation that it is not conducive to their bottom line. They would rather waste their time posting about the morality of wargaming.

This is hardly Steve's fault.

P.S. I am tired of hearing about the post count of this forum. It is this post by me along with the above referred to bs along with "what book have you read lately" which contribute to the overly inflated post count of this forum.

Snarky? I posted objective facts as I understand them from reading that forum. I asked if I was correct. Snarky? I think you're projecting.

As for the post count, sure, some posts are about non-game topics. But the post count has a direct tie to traffic, and it's that traffic that allowed you to expect an answer--and a quick one--to your question about hot seat. Three hours between the ask and the re-ask? You felt as if three hours was enough time for you to wait? If you'd asked about hot seat for the Matrix game "Thirty Years' War" you'd be tapping you foot a long time. Its last post was July 31.

Too snarky for ya?

Are you really kidding me? You have not noticed the amount of OT post in this forum. I don't care about the name of the actual thread. Keep it real.

Did you hear the one about the guy who showed up to the barbeque without an invitation (hasn't bought the game), proceeded to get up on the coffee table, take a dump, then jump down and comment on the poor wood finish?

The recent spate of pre-newbies coming into the forum to "correct" us old-timers for not paying sufficient attention to their needs is funny, but also a sad commentary on modern manners.

Sorry. [:(]

I legitimately would love to be able to play MWiF and WiTF-AE and still function adequately in other aspects in my life. Like most here, I assume, I started wargaming playing with paper and cardboard. The first wargame I played was AH's Stalingrad when I was 12-years old in 1970. The first wargame I owned was AH's France 1940, which I got for Christmas in 1974. I still have my AH's collection, which include 3rd Reich, Victory in the Pacific, War at Sea, Midway, Squad Leader, Cross of Iron, Crescendo of Doom, Panzer Leader, Panzer Blitz, Arab-Israeli Wars, Guns of August, Richthofen's War, Fortress Europe, Russian Front, Hitler's War, Wooden Ships and Iron Men. I also have 30+ issues of AH's, "The General" from the early 1980's. I haven't played any of these games since the late 1980's but I won't get rid of them because they "represent a part of me".

Now, I enjoy history, specifically military history and more superficially WW2. This summer I read four books written by members of the 1st US Marine Division during WW2. "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge, "Helmet for my Pillow" by Robert Leckie, "Islands of the Damned" by R.V. Burgen and "You'll Be SOR-REE!" by Sid Phillips. I also read "Band of Brothers" by Stephen E. Ambrose. Though, I must confess, that I mostly get my history through watching documentaries on "The American Hero's Channel (previously the Military Channel) and Netflix. I recently watched on Netflix a two or three part documentary by David Reynolds of Cambridge entitled, "Long Shadow". The first episode, especially, gave me a perspective that I never have had of what we call the intra-war years of the 20's and 30's; but what the people who lived during that time would have called the post war years.

I'll stop my babbling now, which I'm doing for no reason other than I do enjoy the military history of WW2. It's my hobby and one that I bore to tears a number of my co-workers, especially the younger ones and probably the older ones too, at work.

The reason I like forums like this is that I can babble on about such stuff and there's actually people who are interested (I hope). Also, I know that most people here are far smarter on such subjects that I like to learn from them. Most importantly, and I'm not ashamed to admit it that I come at WW2 for an uniquely US perspective. But, I'm also enjoy and try to learn from the different perspective offered by descendants of the other belligerents and affected neutral countries in WW2.

I play MWiF in order to immerse myself in the military history of WW2. I am hoping I can do the same with WiTP-AE without giving up my rich MWiF gaming experience. I'm also impressed and envious of this forum and would like to participate at a competent level. At a competent level I mean a person who plays and understands WiTP-AE well enough to contribute at some level.

It's time for my morning walk and then SEC COLLEGE FOOTBALL! [:D]

If you need one more data point, my PBEM opponent, Lokasenna, is playing three AE PBEM games right now. Two have AARs. He has a career, a relationship, a house that wants a lot of projects. He's teaching himself trade skills to do those projects. He plays in sports leagues. He has other hobbies besides wargaming, lots of friends, goes to lots of parties and dinners. We have an active email exchange outside the game about many non-AE topics. My wife even feels as if she knows him.

It's possible to play AE and MWiF at the same time.

He should ask me stuff. I have a pretty good set of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, plastering and drywall tools. I did a lot of those things in my house. There wasn't a grounded outlet in the place when I bought it. I replaced most of those and put in ground fault receptacles in the kitchens (duplex) and baths. Way back in the day I did concrete and masonry work, reroofed houses, in one great big three story 19th century house I rehung all the windows, replacing the ropes with chains and making all other needed repairs. Built a lot of decks too.

Yes, there was a time when I composted coffee grounds for my garden, but what did you mean?

By the way, this is one of the most active Saturdays on the forum I've ever seen. Usually people are just too busy with other stuff.

Glad you explained - I thought your comment was about The Gorn's lack of experience with landscaping, on the grounds he has milkweed growing everywhere.

Incidentally I have been replacing old wiring in a friend's house - the wiring itself lacks a ground wire at all (so a grounded outlet is not going to function) or it has a ground wire but the old tarpaper wrap they used as a sheath for the overall wire is disintegrating. And where you cannot get at the wire, the walls are plaster, not drywall! Similar issues with plumbing, phone/internet wiring and heating ductwork.
I have become a great admirer of tradespeople who deal with this stuff daily! [&o]
