Operations Platinfuchs and Polarfuchs up in Finland and the Arctic, could be interesting and a bit more off the beaten path.

I'll have a look at this then, as I've got some books on this already [:)]

I'd be very interested to know what books that you have.

You can never have too many books on the East Front!

Yes, 1942-1943 will be an expansion. Same for 1944-1945.

West Front II and Pacific Front will follow the same model.

Wait five-six years for us to release a complete East Front or release it sooner in pieces. We chose the latter.

Looking forward to the release of East Front III, as well as Vietnam and all the others you have planned.

Just curious, will we be able to copy over an East Front II scenario into East Front III and play it?

With all the under the hood changes, no, it is unlikely to have a drag and drop solution.

You can never have too many books on the East Front!

Well to start with, there's a plethora of books on Winter, Continuation, and Lapland Wars from Finnish authors, in Finnish only for most part. To name my favorites from scenario design point of view would be the work by military historians Raunio (FI) and Kilin (RU), who've covered pretty much all major battles in a manner there's the detailed maps available, with then a narrative based both on Finnish and Russian archive materials.

Here's a legit scan of one of the Raunio/Kilin books adverts to describe the level of detail:

Image

To top that of, pretty much all surviving War Diaries of Finnish units are made available on-line as original scans, at times providing Coy level diaries to describe the flow of events.

This covers the areas where Finns were involved though, so Arctic Fox (Polarfuchs) is pretty thoroughly covered.

For the Operations Reindeer (Rentier) and Platinum Fox (Platinfuchs) I've got less original material, but there's a few high level books I've got, also from online materials there's the Ziemke books (Ziemke, Earl F.: The German Northern Theater of Operations 1940-1945. (1959)) and then the US documentation on RKKA's Kirkenes Operation (Gebhardt, James F.: The Petsamo-Kirkenes Operation: Soviet Breakthrough and Pursuit in the Arctic, October 1944. (1989)).

Here's the links for the Ziemkeand Gerbhardt books referred above:

Ziemke, Earl F.: The German Northern Theater of Operations 1940-1945. (1959)
Available online for free, - note that there are two parts. A must have!

Gebhardt, James F.: The Petsamo-Kirkenes Operation: Soviet Breakthrough and Pursuit in the Arctic, October 1944. (1989)
Available online for free, but the link seems to be dead now?
http://cgsc.cdmhost.com/cdm/singleitem/ ... /331/rec/1.

The Finnish formations taking part in Platinum Fox, namely 14th Infantry and Detachment Pechenga have surviving War Diaries [:)]

Edit: some fairly new other books in English would include:

[*] Finland's War of Choice: The Untidy Coalition of a Democracy and a Dictatorship in World War II by by Henrik O. Lunde (2011)
[*] Hitler’s Nordic Ally?: Finland and the Total War 1939 - 1945 by Claes Johansen (2016)
[*] Hitler's Arctic War: The German Campaigns in Norway, Finland and the USSR 1940-1945 by Chris Mann, Christer Jrgensen (2012, rev. 2016)

These are on higher level though, not valid for scenario design, but valid overviews regardless.

Thanks for the suggestion! They sure form an interesting look to fighting in the Arctic in 1941, I am not sure how many games before would have covered them.

Understand with the no transfer to version III. No prob.

For map making and scenario creation, any plans for more terrain variety, or more town / village structures to choose from?

That is not the question of course. The question is: Would there be more snow variety in EF III?

For we know, that Eskimos, and to large extent Finns too, have 100 words for snow and CS, so far, only one. Oh, the shame of it!

Did you know: "100 words for snow" does not refer to 100 synonyms for the same white stuff, but for each a specific word for each a specific snow condition. And there's a plethora of those of course.

For instance: slush, that wet stuff on ground, is 'loska' in Finnish. While falling down, that same wet stuff is 'räntä'.

Then, how was Game of Thrones character Jon Snow named in Finnish translations? Answer: Jon Nietos. 'Nietos' means a-thick-blanket-of-fresh-snow-on-ground, after for instance a-heavy-snow-fall-while-it-not-being-very-windy i.e. 'pyry'.

Nietos should not be mistaken with 'kinos' which is a bit similar to 'nietos', but not a result of the 'pyry', but a result of wind having blown the snow into piles, under for instance a brief heavy-snow-fall-while-weather-being-very-windy-even-stormy. And yes, there is a word for that too: 'myräkkä'. End results is this piles-of-snow (kinos) somewhere, not much snow elsewhere.

So remember: Jon Kinos would be a very different person from Jon Nietos. At least for the natives here. For others, all Jon Snows would perhaps look the same? [:)]

In English, I am aware of three words, snow being one of them. The two other? Slush, and powder

EDIT: Apologies, there's more of course: hail, and sleet, at least. That's five already! There you go! And actually, if we extend a bit it gets eve better: there's ice, frost, rime, each being a different thing right. So you guys do know your white stuff after all, at least somewhat.

I give English Language thus a C for the effort for this particular case [8D]

We have the white stuff on the ground right now in Indiana.

Man, who doesn't like snow? Snow balls, snow forts, snow men, snow skiing.... White snow, grey snow, yellow snow...
