On sale or not on sale - Bill Olson's sigpic says it all :
WitP-AE is the "best bang for the buck" - if you like turn-based strategy games instead of instant-gratification type of games.
It has been called a "second profession" and a "time vampire of a game" because it is so huge and complex that many players use Excel files and third-party software tools to keep track of what is going on, and a campaign can take years to finish (if you still have a life outside AE).
It is also highly addictive, the "just one more turn" effect is the same as with the famous Civilization series, the difference is that a turn in Civilization takes a few minutes and in AE it can take hours. In fact it is even worse - I just realize that I have been addicted to all versions of Civilization up to Civ 4 + Add-Ons. However, I did not purchase Civ V released in 2010 - mainly because WitP-AE has been released in 2009 and there is no need or time for other games anymore.
Ok, to stop the rant - the message is "BUY!".

I would buy it just to study the corrected Australian Army OOB in the "The long, long road to Tokyo" modified grand campaign.

another reason to buy the game ---
Just how much history of machines, ships and men that this game holds. I learned more about the War in Pacific in the 4-5 years I have had this game than the previous 45 years of general historical reading.

No, the Gorn was making a clever point through his sense of humor.
Indeed, every play can take hours!

Tough to argue with you there, though there are some people so obsessed with various games it would be tough to find the worst culprit on that score.

I absolutely have to agree with this. There is nothing like an interactive simulation to supplement your understanding of history.
For example you really cannot comprehend what a miracle the Battle of Midway was until you try to pull one off yourself.... Also history books concentrate on combat units when any player of this game knows the war in the Pacific is all about cargo ships and supply....
Any value of any simulation depends on its accuracy but despite a few flaws, WITP-AE is much better than the original WITP and holds up very well in this respect.
A must buy.

Agree with Reg's remarks with some additions. I tried to play a pure naval game without all the LCU and Air Unit stuff and found that it was not possible to make progress without attending to all aspects of the game. Ships must have nearby bases to repair and replenish at, which in turn must have enough supply and fuel, which must be brought and protected en route, which requires air cover. Moving forward requires conquest of new bases using LCUs. I began to understand why inter-service cooperation was so important and why the lack of it really hurt Japan.
And then there is the truth that the day-after-day grinding in theatres all over the map contributes significantly to gaining victory - it isn't just about the big battles that get all the press.
