Dog 'N Suds had a mascot that looked like a rip-off of Pluto (the cartoon hound) and was carrying a tray in one hand that looked like it had a float and a burger on it. I remember many times we'd drive on right past that place and I'd look longingly at it thinking I'd really like a grape soda just now. Later, when I was older, and much more sophisticated, I had a summer job when I wasn't going to college at an A&W drive in. We had car-hops who worked for tips! Imagine that. Those clunky aluminum two-way speakers you hung on your car window. You'd often as not drop them and they'd hit the asphalt below, but they were indestructable and at the same time unitelligible when someone was trying to talk to you. It sounded like the teacher in a Charlie Brown cartoon, "Wah wah, wah wah wah wah." There was a KFC next door. Many times I would make cole slaw for the both of us, put it in those little foam containers that were unmarked and carry a big tray of those over to the KFC for them to sell. I knew the owner of the A&W and he didn't own the KFC, it was just a matter of convenience. Sometimes they'd make the cole slaw.

There are diners with those sorts of juke boxes today. There is one in Vancouver, WA called the Starlight. I think it's a chain.

Talking about that, we have, among others, two main sorts of diners. Courtesy Diners (I try to effect a southern accent when vocalizing that) and EAT-RITE diners. I think the slogan for them is EAT-RITE or don't eat at all. [:D]

The Starlight is a 50s style diner. Lots of neon and chrome. The food is decent, but not the best cuisine around. It's in a neighborhood with a lot of other restaurants, many of them with better food. Though it is a good place to get breakfast fare in the evening if that's what you're in the mood for.

We also have this: Uncle Bills Pancake House. They are open 24/7 and their menu looks like a Howard Johnson's menu. I know people who are addicted to buckwheat pancakes but I personally favor the chicken-fried steak.

When I was in 1st grade our neighbor in Devils Lake owned the A & W. Sometime he would his kids and me there to check things out and we sat with frosty mug of root beer.[:)]

I think he merely refers to the dual portals for placing the two bun halves for toasting. Remember, he was a university student at the time and everything had some resemblance to women's anatomy. [:D]
