Found it !
In the 'Reinforcement Status' info panel in the top game bar, in the 'Destroyed Units' list, when you click on a destroyed unit you get a 'Rebuild' button IF there are replacements in the pool for the correct nation and type of troops.
In the game save I just checked I could rebuild a lost British armoured brigade, because there were appropriate replacements, but couldn't rebuild a commando unit, as there were no commando replacements available. It's worth checking the list from time to time because replacements for special forces and some limited national forces become available in later turns.
A good feature to have.

I don't know if this game has any more development future, the lack of response from Matrix indicates, probably not.
I found the game interesting to play and a good representation of the WW2 Italian Campaign, although the game system is different from most other titles, once understood, it plays easily and quickly, with the minimum mouse clicks to achieve a deep and challenging strategic game.
The AI is competent, but as with all such games is limited, although it can be assisted with some simple house rules to raise the level of the contest.
I've not played this for a couple of years now, but I enjoyed the Axis and Allied campaigns that I managed to complete. It's a great game system. Based on the surprise update to COTD, perhaps Frank Hunter is still committed to continued development of both of these games. Maybe we'll yet see a surprise patch for PFE?
Also, maybe we'll yet see Frank's new games for Campaigns on the Elbe and PFE D-Day?? [8D]

Thanks Rasputitsa for info on this game. Matrix seemed to have abandoned it. I'm thinking of buying it in this years D-Day sale. Can someone advise me whether you can get rid of the hexes on the map?

AFAIK the hex-sides are embedded in the map and there is no hot-key control to remove them, but the 'Chemkid' map mod uses more subtle colours and the hex sides are not so obvious, but still on the map.

Thanks for responding. I wouldn't play (or buy) it without the chemkid map, because the stock map looks awful. But the chemkid map seems to have disappeared from the mods slot here....

The game really needs the 'Chemkid' map and counter mod, but Chemkid has left the forum. I have copies of the mods if required.[:)]

I have never had a problem with the map/units TBH, but would not mind taking a look. Thanks for your kind offer.
