on a side note, during one of my first cruises aboard, we went down to test depth. i was on watch in the torp room for some reason (long time ago, cant remember why.) and a couple of guys took some string and taped it tight to both sides of the bulkhead. It was tight as a guitar string. And down we went. Got to test depth, glanced at the string, and it was sagging. I was more freaked out by the noises of the hull groaning and popping due to the pressure more than anything.

Every sub sailor has a similar story.

Interesting. What about the 'metallic rumbling' or the sound that sounds like the hull is twisting? I often found some military fiction books has wrote how submarine make noises when diving very deep. Is it a myth, or still classified?

Hull noises at high depths are not so secret. Some PC games like Dangerous Waters simulate this.

Of course the real feel should be far more frightening than a mere video game, as was reported above by the Topeka sailor SSN754planker.

My above suppositions about the maximum depths of the American submarines are mere speculations. If I knew the true specifications, I'd never tell anyone. Although I am Brazilian, I am very pro-USA and I will never want the Russians, Chinese, Iranians and North Koreans to ever get ahead in any military technology.

That's the sound of metal moving due to insane pressures. Every single submarine ever built has this effect. I'm sure the US and Russian navy knows the exact characteristics of their subs at those depths. Sure they can go deeper, but they know they will start making "some sounds".

All this depth talk raises another interesting and probably as important a question: What about the ASW weapons? How are they affected by depth? I know that past a certain depth torpedoes can't be launched, but is there a point at which you are essentially "safe" because the ASW weapons themselves can't function?

At least from the CMANO point of view, I don't think so - although depending on how deep a sub is, what the weapon is, and how the WRA is set for the launching unit, there may be some situations where a sub going very deep might wind up sitting in a torpedo's blind spot the entire time. As a player you can usually get around that - AI might not be so clever and fall for it repeatedly. But as far as I know, guided ASW torpedoes do not have a depth limit once they're locked on a target.

And then again, I don't think "safe" actually exists, considering the sheer variety of nuclear ASW systems in the game - no amount of depth will save you from them [;)]

I've had torpedoes find my subs quite deep. Too many times.
