Where's Meyer1? He wrote this in a previous thread about the movie.
"As for the movie, you know is gonna suck."
He seemed so sure...based on ESP or something.

Alas, I travel for business this week and will have to try to fit it into my itinerary over this next week. But by God, I shall.

Looking forward to get this movie and Darkest Hours too.
+1 on Darkest Hour - it was to be John Hurt's last film (playing Chamberlain) but he was too ill to film and his place taken by Ronald Pickup.

Sounds like a great movie and looking forward to seeing it. And certainly a great moment in history for the UK/Commonwealth forces of all arms.
But I do hope they give at least a nod to the contributions of the French forces, particularly the French First Army which fought on at Lille to cover the retreat. From the wiki:
"In his celebrated book The Second World War (1949), Winston Churchill described the Allied defence of Lille as a "splendid contribution" which delayed the German advance for four days and allowed the escape of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk."
"William L. Shirer wrote in 1969 that the "gallant" defence of Lille "helped the beleaguered Anglo-French forces around the port to hold out for an additional two to three days and thus save at least 100,000 more troops"."

Going to see that Saturday. Should be great because it is mostly no-name British actors which is generally a sign of a 5 star movie. If it sucks I do not care, movies are an excuse to go out and eat popcorn and pizza.

Do you think it might be better than "Mrs. Miniver?"

Ah Mrs Miniver. That was a nice little film - and all the better for not having Harry Styles in it [:)]

I still think Dunkirk would have been better if, in traditional Hollywood fashion, all those Limeys, who were too busy brewing tea to fight, were rescued by U.S. Marines flying P-51 Mustangs. Also, there should be a ridiculous love triangle and all the women in it are ahistorically "fast", as my Mother would say [:'(]

Saw the film this morning, not what I expected. Timeline was hard to follow, it centered around a small core of original characters and their experiences. A naval commander, a little boat and its crew, a few privates, 2 RAF fighter pilots (those Merlin engines sounded really great in the cinema) and a army colonel. There was no moralizing in the film which was a nice change. Overall it was a okay watch and most certainly worth watching again.

The aerial scenes were truly top notch keeping in mind next to no CGI was used there. What you see is how it was! Something to keep in mind when watching.
Spitfires were truly gorgeous, and a special mention for the Blenheim MkI cameo somewhere in between too

RE: New Dunkirk Trailer
I had faith in Nolan turning his back on love triangles/love story and any moralising like the usual Hollywood War films of recent years.
Have yet to see this but I do recommend an old black and white film called Dunkirk. Well worth a watch. Also considering when it was made was pretty raw with no propaganda taint either.

Timeline admittedly made watching a bit more difficult, but I think it worked quite nicely as an alternative to a linear storytelling. Especially as the historical evacuation was a well-known end.

A mild spoiler warning:
In fact, maybe worth repeating about the timeline,
[*] the soldiers are pictured spending a week there, trying to get out,
[*] the father and son in their boat are depicted as how their one day there and back went, and finally,
[*] the pilots are there for one hour, as that was all they had gasoline for.
This being a Nolan movie, the timeline then evolves around this, flashbacks and all, bringing all them together to same locations at times, then taking them apart again. I guess knowing this beforehand would have made it a bit easier to grasp all of it. Although it was sort of said in the film that this is how it goes. I didn't completely get it at the time though
