Not a picture so much as a painting. One of the most emblematic as far as I'm concerned: Tom Lea's "Ten Thousand Yard Stare"

Private Theodore James Miller assigned to the 22nd Marine Independent Regiment returns to Coast Guard-manned attack transport USS Arthur Middleton after combat on Engebi. Engebi was the first of the Eniwetok Atoll to be invaded by American forces.

In Operation "Fragile" the 1st and 2nd Battalions landed on February 18, 1944, with 3rd Battalion in reserve. In the attack on Engebi American losses were 78 killed, 166 wounded, and 7 missing, totaling 251 casualties. All of Engebi's defenders were killed, except for nineteen prisoners taken.

Miller himself was killed in action during the invasion of Ebon Atoll a month later. 25 Japanese, including six civilians (two women and two children among them), put up a 20-minute fire-fight that left Miller and another Marine dead and eight others wounded.

This one. One of the first pictures I saw when I got my "USA in World War II" book aged eight for my birthday.

Made me look it up. Actually Lea's piece (and the USMC moniker) is the "2000 yard stare".

Sorry gents - the definitive picture of the Pacific War is one of my father in 1943 just before being shipped to New Guinea - enlisted May 1942, retired summer 1964

There is no one, iconic picture of WWII or any other war for that matter. There are victors; there are losers. But there are no winners. So, how could there be one picture the describes the war?

I believe Sherman said, "War is Hell". Unless someone has a picture of hell, I doubt we will ever have a definitive picture of this or any other war.

Above I see a lot of pictures of the war. Too bad these pictures don't go any further to stop the next war.

What does the OP see as the iconic image if the Pacific War?

Admittedly not the Pacific in WWII but this guy did an OK job.

A hundred years later and the earth still shows the scars.

The OP asked an interesting and provocative question. Forumites could weigh in with all kinds of good suggestions, insights, and remembrances of the photos that made an impact on them.

Instead, we get Forumites wishing to say that no picture will work because nobody can win a war, pictures of decrepit cities, pictures from Europe in the Great War, etc.

Is it that difficult for us to stay on task? Do we have to nitpick a post to death? Do we have to run away with random thoughts that add nothing to the discussion?

P.S. This isn't directed in particular at any of the gentlemen posting here - lots of good people. But...really?

P.P.S. And I'm adding to the mayhem by being cranky! Long night last night; hard day today. I'll get some sleep, feel better in the morning, and hope I didn't give offense to any gents who unintentionally crossed words with my thoughts....or something like that.
