and most of the separate engineer units were well forward building fortifications on 22/6 and were wiped out very quickly.
Just as a clarification (if I have read it correctly)
Combat Engineers - built roads, buildings, fortifications etc, cleared minefields, destroyed enemy strong points under enemy gunfire; aka Assault Engineers, Sappers or Pioneers.
Engineers - built roads, buildings, fortifications etc, cleared minefields, destroyed enemy strong points after the battle had passed
The AXIS had lots of the former and the Soviets more of the latter.
And Soviet Construction Battalions were typically pick and shovel affairs for building defensive positions comprising military personnel ie some armed, and civilian 'volunteers'
