A great scenario that misses out on one crucial aspect of the campaign in Sicily and later Salerno and Anzio.....the naval support element.

Turn 1
10th July 1943
I've no idea what I am doing, how strong the enemy is, what I need to be taking, so lets just get stuck in and see what happens.....
When in doubt, attack [:D]

mmmmm...... [;)]

Turn 3 - Axis Turn
12th July 1943
There was a lot of choo choo action - seems to me that the enemy is heading northeast asap. I think I put my British air units too close to Axis guns.....whoops...

Turn 3
12th July 1943
I fail to take any shots of that debacle of a turn..... I will try and give a proper update next turn.

Turn 4 - Axis Turn
13th July 1943
A lot of movement on mainland Italy as well as in the northeast of the island. Blocking forces are placed in front of all divisions.

Turn 4 - Axis Turn
13th July 1943
I haven't really got any feel for this scenario and what the hell is going on.
First things first I check my air units and see these are in terrible shape... very few squadrons operational. I place most of these to rest and try and sort out the land campaign....

Turn 4
13th July 1943
I forgot to take a picture, but will do this next turn and try and give a proper overview of the situation. The British have made some progress on the east coast but I then failed a proficiency check so things have stalled again.

When running an offense, it usually doesn't hurt to eliminate enemy units and conquer terrain [;)]
Sometimes reading the Scenario Briefing will give an idea of what you should be doing. Otherwise, I usually check for a Wiki article on the battle. Generally, scenario design will cater to history [;)]

Not too much to report other than the Axis air force is a killer....

Here is an overview of the situation post the Allied movement and pre the rounds.

Turn 6 - Axis Turn
15th July 1943
Again, not much to report other than the Axis continue to slowly fall back, blowing bridges and generally being anti-social.

Turn 6
15th July 1943
All the action seems to be taking place on the east coast of the island. The Axis air forces are attacking everywhere, the Allied air force seems to be rubbish so I'm doing something wrong. I have engineers trying to repair broken bridges as they come across them.

Turn 7 - Axis Turn
16th July 1943
The Axis fire shot and shell into the reinforced British 5th Infantry attempting to cross the river east of Gerbini. In support of their fallen comrades to 50th Division decide to go into melt down. Thanks lads that's really great.....
Just to add to my mood of an unalloyed delight, 150th Squadron suffers a furball.....

Turn 7
16th July 1943
The obvious thing to do here is to outflank the enemy, but the Germans have blown the bridge to the west and have the crossing guarded by strong mechanised forces. A crossing is found further west at Enna and so I will try and exploit this.
The British press on regardless and in the teeth of enemy fire they try and force the river on the coast. Some enemy withdraw but there are units that take their place and the line holds.
I really don't want to look at the casualty situation.....

Turn 8
17th July 1943
I've run into something of a meat grinder here. I tried an attack which slaughtered my attacking units so ended up bombarding only. I should re-evaluate my strategy and try something different but hey, if it was good enough for Paulus at Stalingrad, Napoleon at Borodino and Haig at the Somme, then its got to be a good strategy right?
Ho hum....
