The P-40Ks may have used drop tanks on the squadron commander's orders because the range was going to be extreme for a LRCAP mission. Sort of like a TB squadron will automatically switch from torpedoes to bombs once the mission range is beyond the max torpedo carrying range.
BB - even with drop tanks, extended range for the P-40K is 7 hexes!
I'll buy the F6F and P-47 "wandering" out 8 hexes, but a P-40K??
There's something wonky with the ranges for the Kittyhawk III. 200m = 5 hexes but 250m = 7 hexes.
Does the engine take notice of:
Hexes range.
Miles range (Is the data nautical miles and the map statute miles??)
Cruise speed x endurance
??

IIRC, ranges in miles are rounded up always. 39 = 1 hex, 41 = 2 hex.
As far as I know for range only the hexes count.
For combat, max speed and range in miles seem to influence "out of fuel" messages.

rustysi - either you didn't read the entire thread or it was unclear.
No, niether is the case.
CAP/LRCAP will operate up to three hexes from its assigned target, unless the range is limited. My point here being if your LRCAP can potentially reach a point beyond the aircrafts' max range please limit the range setting by all means. In this cased the aircraft operated at a range of 8 hexes when its range within the game is limited to 7. So if your target is six hexes as is the case here, set the range to one.
TBH I had no idea LRCAP would operate effectively that far out. I typically don't go more than a few hexes on LRCAP.
