SIPRES, this is really a strange coincidence... I literally just finished similar game-start popups for the China campaign this morning, without knowing you were doing them for Spain too. Like you, I am also was concerned that they might be too text dense, but I've decided to keep since the events in China are less well known (at least in the West) than in Europe, so it gives the campaign a touch of context.

Your info is surely similarly valuable and will be welcome by people who might excel at WW2 history but be much less familiar with Spain of the early 1800's. I'd recommend keeping the info - it's only a couple clicks through.

By 1808 Spain was suffering from both an economical and political crises. The disaster of Trafalgar in 1805 led to difficulties in maintaining trade with the American colonies, and King Charles the IV and his prime Minister Manuel Godoy had become unpopular. In March of 1808 the Mutiny of Aranjuez forced King Charles to dismiss Godoy, but it didn't help him as two days later the court forced the King himself to abdicate in favor of his son and rival, King Ferdinand VII.

Napoleon, under the false pretense of resolving the conflict, invited both Charles IV and Ferdinand VII to Bayonne, France. Both were afraid of the French ruler's power and thought it appropriate to accept the invitation. Once in Bayonne Napoleon forced them both to renounce the throne and grant it to himself. The Emperor then named his brother, Joseph Bonaparte as king of Spain. The Spanish populace quickly disapproved of their new "King" and even more so of the presence of French troops on Spanish soil.

The Spanish citizens refused to accept Joseph Bonaparte following the "Entrevue de Bayonne" as their king. An uprising in Madrid led to street fighting with elements of the French Imperial Guard. The rebellion was (quickly?) crushed by the French troops, and the repression of the population afterwards was harsh. (add titles and/or first name?) Murat created a military commission on the evening of May the 2nd to be presided over by General Grouchy. This commission issued death sentences to all those captured that were bearing weapons of any kind against the French.

However I am now working on a full Napoleonic war campaign 1805-1815 (including peninsular).
