The original was a 5 hour mini-series. You can get a 209 minute version on Amazon.

It's great. The "German with English subtitles" is more informative and precise in meaning than the "In English" option.

Also another good movie was Crimson Tide "Capt I relieve you from the command of this ship":

Crimson Tide was abhorrent as both a story and a piece of moviemaking. It was also dangerous in that it indicated to the public that such a thing could happen.

Nope it was good filmmaking as well most good actors just like Red October...if you looked for realism in these 2 then perhaps not so much

I liked 'Red October'. 'Crimson Tide' not so much.

I am thinking of ordering the blue ray version. But some blue ray transfers are pretty sucky. Does anyone own the blue ray and find it to be of good quality.

The "new" 2014 (german) Blu-Ray version of "Das Boot" is pretty good. It's split into 6 parts of 52 minutes again (like the TV-Version) and contains flashback(?) and preview at start of each episode. It's also some kind of "remastered", nothing too great but still pretty good. :)
Not sure about the US market version.

Europe had a different standard for TV displays than the Americas. I am not sure if the standards have been brought together once digital broadcast became the norm or if there is a difference still. That might affect compatibility of DVDs.

I think that there already was remake . . . Das Booty. It may have veered from the original somewhat.

Having been on such a boat for many years, the Hunt for Red October was a great movie, Crimson Tide was not.
Red October tried to be realistic and accurate. Tom Clancy was known for that. Crimson Tide - I am not sure - perhaps it wanted to be just an action filled adventure. Perhaps I was expecting more from such a wonderful cast in Crimson Tide. I loved Bat 21.

It is BluRay - not DVD... [8D]

Thanks to this post I saw Crimson Tide for the first time in these last days; cannot say about the movie, which is interesting still at least, but the interpretation of Gene Hackman is masterful and impressive; Denzel Washington good too;

So, they are going to remake one of the best movies ever. What's next, a re-boot of "Gone With the Wind?"

Cheers,
