I use the same technique as Larry. I move my reinforcements forward (when I remember), do a lot of moves and plan attacks. I think check out my attacks and see if any are taking a long time - like your attacks 3 and 5 in the post above. I then hold off on those attacks and run the first round. I can usually get 3-5 rounds in when I pay attention.

Also, I generally only look at the odds for a battle and use my instincts and gut to decide on attacks, not the game engine's ideas.

I'm calling it quits on this scenario for now.

In a historical scenario like this, I lose interest if I can't approach a historical outcome. The only victory conditions I'm interested in really are those that fit with the historical outcome POTENTIALLY. It's not that I have to win.

In this case, having lost the early game, not being able to make my pivot to the south, and being weeks behind the historical advance, it just doesn't seem right. Alternative victory point locations along the Belgian coast are not historical, and I can't see much value in them from the German standpoint. It's not like their loss would damage the supply lines into the Entente forces.

I noted that I was able to take Liege and Namur pretty much on schedule, in large part because of my mismanagement of time and rounds, but the AI was capable of moving far faster into Belgium than historical. There was no Joffre on the AI side this time around, to hold the French 5th Army to the south, nor was there a UK General French who was hesitent to push the BEF far forward and to split it up.

I do want to thank the scenario designer. I might fiddle with the PO objectives to see if a more historical outcome would be approachable, forcing the French into a more historical stance.

I'm also going to try the other 1914 scenarios in the future, to see if the differing scales make a difference in replicating history.

Sounds like the scenario is not balanced correctly. Has anyone found a better scenario for the Western Front in 1914?
