As an example of what can be done with the game's art -

I use a modified version of Chemkid's YamatoDamashii SunnyDay map where I added in new locations to suit my needs. For instance, in the Solomons I added base names like Milne Bay and Vella La Vella (had to - just look at my avatar). Jace's interface was also modified to have a black background where the base info and unit icons are displayed to make it easier to read.

Start small.

The game comes with a bunch of scenarios as well as the grand campaign.

Each of those scenarios is a mini-tutorial.

Coral Sea is carrier battles, Thousand Mile War is amphib invasions and naval combat and Guadalcanal is a much smaller version of the grand campaign.

There's good AAR's aplenty for you to read, and the forum is pretty great for folk asking questions.

Maybe there will be a midsummer sale this year?

There could be a Memorial Day sale or D-Day sale. Either way, full price is still cheaper in fractions of pennies per hour played than any other game I've ever bought.

Don't fret the lack of you tube tutorials, etc. There is a ton of helpful information on this very active forum and a bunch of very helpful fellow players. If you have any interest in the theater at all and like complex games, you will NOT be disappointed. [8D]

Yes very much interested. I have WiTE and although not good at it, it is fun. I do prefer more then just land combat. Is there an AAR or something that I can play along with that I can possible learn from? And I am going to but it so where can I get the maps that you guys recommended and where do they get installed? Thank you :)

Also I should get WiTP Admirals Edition correct?

AAR forum is full of good examples.

This one is geared toward explaining the game to newbies:

Yes, Admirals Edition is the newer upgraded version of the original game.

There are tutorials on Youtube but you have to check the forum for a better understanding of the game. Said that this game is amazing but not good for casual play [;)]

Yeah, not looking for casual play looking to dive deep into something that will keep my busy but don't want to jump into the deep end all at once lol...

Learning the game goes hand in hand with playing the game, to try and learn the game and then play it is futile.

You can make your turns as shallow or as deep as you want.

Play some of the short scenarios or...

Start a campaign game as the Allies. Suffer the SURPRISE attack at Pearl, being new to the game adds to it. You are now at war. By the summer of '42 you will have a basic understanding. A campaign allows for a continuous beginner's format.

Even one who has played for years still learns in this game.

MakeeLearn is right - you learn by playing.

I learned the game well enough to play (I say that because this is one of those games where you never stop learning) by jumping straight into the grand campaign, but by leaning heavily on Kull's excellent beginning turn spreadsheet for the Allies. You want to play the Allies while learning because Japan has a more complex economic model which you don't want to tackle until you get comfortable with the rest of the game.

The beginning turn takes much longer than most turns, but the spreadsheet helps break it up into manageable chunks. It gives you specific instructions about what order to issue to EVERY SINGLE UNIT on the map. What I would do is sit down and tackle one portion of the map (the spreadsheet allows you to filter and sort) such as the Philippines and work through the spreadsheet line by line until all the orders were issued for that region. Over a course of a few days for an hour or two at a time, I worked my way through the spreadsheet until it was done. By the time I was done, I had practiced issuing orders for every unit type and base well enough that I had developed the muscle memory to know how to continue playing the game on my own.

So I would say just focus on learning the game interface at first - don't worry about strategy and whatnot until you have a good handle on how to interact with the game. The spreadsheet will cover you on strategy and will set things up for you to have a good game moving forward.

Oh, and another important step - SAVE the "completed" first turn when you finish (but before you hit the next turn button). That way if you decide to start over at some point, you don't need to redo the entire first turn again.

I think another thing very important is if you like this theatre of war, reading books and play this game is very appealing, not sure if you no have interest in it. IMHO

I do, very much so... But I like more battle oriented books and not so much on the books that rely on heavy politcal aspects of the why, what, where, and when pertaining to the war. I was never really interested in war and history till recently. I have grown very fond of it and am now looking to not only learn but play genre of games that are oriented toward the same...

To get the base game started and updated to the latest beta patch, here's the rough outline:

Go to the "Members" section of this website.
Image

Log into your account via the "Members Login" box on the top right side.
Image

Find "War in the Pacific - Admiral's Edition" in the list of games. Copy your game key to a notepad or word file (or even write it down if you prefer), then click on the "Downloads" link.
Image

Edit: updated to point to latest 1126b beta file.

Download both the "Installer" file as shown in the picture below (ignore the crossed-out box) and the "Open Beta Update v1.01.26b" files available on the forums here.
Image

Install the game using the "Installer" file first, then install the beta patch afterwards. Use the game key you copied from the prior step. At this point you should have the base game installed. Try running the game just to see if it works - note that the resolution won't be right yet, and it may act sluggish.

Then you'll be ready to download and run SeaBee. Let's get the base game installed before we go too far, though. If you run into any snags with the install process, just let us know.

Ok I am downloading the game and do I need to run that exe file then do what you told me or just what you told me to do without running WarinthePacifiAD.exe file?

From the "Installer" .zip file download, extract the .exe file (
"WarinthePacificAdmiralsEdition-SetupRelease-v10079DR.exe") and run it to install the base game.

Do the same with the beta patch file after the base install has completed. The beta file is "WarinthePacificAdmiralsEdition-UpdateComp-v1126a.exe".

Be mindful that the beta patch doesn't overwrite the base game .exe file; instead, it installs a parallel .exe file in the "Beta2" subdirectory. You'll want to make sure that you run the beta .exe to run the game, although you have the option of running the original version of the game if the need should ever arise. Don't worry, SeaBee will help you create the shortcut to the right .exe file.

Let me know when you get both of these installed successfully, then we'll move on to the next step.
