Human beings being what they are, that is not a state of affairs that could exist for any length of time. So had 1775 been averted, then it would have been but a temporary reprieve.

Aye. Had 1775 been averted, things would have come to loggerheads in the early 19th century. Maybe even before 1812. Failing that rift, there was a period of tension between 1812 and the 1820s or so. Then, if things had turned out differently with the Europeans providing material support to the Confederate States in 1861-1865, that would have resulted in even greater 'differences' with the UK after the war during reconstruction.

I'm glad it didn't fester too long and that it's over and done with. Had American-British relations been sour (or at least icy) in the early 20th century, the world may be a very different place than it is today. And Britain may very well be a different place today.

Yep, who knows - maybe the UK and America could still be separated by one language - only the language would be German..... and you guys still wouldn't be able to speak it properly [:D]

I wonder how one says 'Tea Party' in German anyways?

Or if this is a faithful translation?:

Nieder mit dem König! [:'(]

I wonder if this would have caught on:

Ich sage alter Junge. Tennis jemand? [:D]

This would have been easy to translate though:

Jolly Jolly gut.

How about "Ich mochte ein alt bier, bitte!"

See, I could have gotten the important beverage.

Certainly an interesting conundrum. But one would have to question why one would be so keen to learn phrases that pertain to the American War of Independence after the US has just lost her independence to the Germans? I would have thought concentrating the mind on how to break free of the German yoke (don't worry, no more eggscruciating egg puns from me) would be a more sensible use of time then ensuring sundry references to tea, tea parties, sipping tea, dropping tea into rivers, mad king, taxation without representation etc. are translated perfectly into the US' new mother tongue. I think it could safely be argued you would be concentrating on the wrong issue [:)]

The US would not have had to break free of the German yoke. The Japanese did not consider invasion because of the people having their hunting weapons along with their other weapons for target practice and such. The Germans would have been in a similar situation except that the population density would be higher. So no need to break any yoke unless it is self imposed.

But if you do break the yolk, you might as well just scramble the eggs since you can't have them with the nice, runny, delicious yolk . . .

edited for changing tenses.

Its interesting how this discussion made it past the "no politics" test and my Wall post was not able to pass the test. Weird measuring tool need to be re-calibrated.

A yoke is used when harnessing some animals while the yolk is the delicious part of the egg . . .

Well done on freeing yourselves from the yoke of a monarchy. It's a shame the British never did the same. We are still stuck with them.
warspite1

'The yoke of the monarchy'? Well don't think omlettin' that slide. The British did get rid of the monarchy and eggsactly how did that turn out? The alternative was not all it was cracked up to be was it? Cromwell presided over a country where one could be executed for poaching. Even getting laid was frowned upon in his puritanical state. Daily beatings were common and Frydays were set aside as a special punishment days - no wonder so many people scrambled to leave the country. At least Charles I wasn't chicken and he went to his death with dignity.

Anyway, I'm eggnoring such buffoonery. God Save The Queen! God bless her - oh and Happy Birthday America.

By the way, this is awful. Well done. [:D]

One thing about a monarchy, you should have continuity at the head of state position. Some are good, some are bad, but it does not have to be absolute nor a figurehead position to have a good continuity.

That said, the "Yellow Ribbon around the Old Oak Tree" comes from the Puritans. It is a symbol of purity. Unlike when a sailor came back from a nine month cruise and had not seen his wife in the meantime. She showed up at the dock with one in the oven, at the six month stage.
