Thanks for the detailed feedback. It helps to plan the direction I want this to go in.

Suggestions:
1. Maybe 5KM with only likely active theaters and passes open for play? Looped rail lines to simulate distances to require less jumping around? Much less aesthetically pleasing, perhaps better gameplay.

I'm not sure if you are aware, but the internal map scale is set at 25km, which is over 3x the scale that the actual map was drawn. I believe the scenario designers did that to slow things down and scale movement rates to the time period. It would also account for the terrain effects being minimized.

2. Weekly turns? Would need to be checked against whatever map scale is chosen.
At the minimum. I was actually thinking 2-week or monthly turns.

3. Remove proficiency disbands and perhaps throttle with replacement rate instead.

Not sure about this yet. The OOB is quite streamlined, but I have some issues with it.
4. Focus more on gameplay and less on historical accuracy requiring house rules, like HQ disbands for Grant because of promotions.

Always a challenge for a scenario designer. Playability vs History. I'll do my best to avoid house rules.
5. Solve the fort problem for early scenario. Boats too weak to defend.

Should be fixed with proper map scaling.

I had seen the map scale versus scenario manual scale discrepancy but admit I never made the connection you did! Things make MUCH more sense all the sudden. Thank you for the education and your reply.

You're welcome. I did something similar in my American Revolution scenario (Call to Arms) during the initial design in the early days of TOAW III. The impact was not as pronounced because that war relied less on massed firepower, and more on maneuver and unit cohesion.

But TOAW IV has more scenario design tools than previous versions, and is better at simulating pre-20th century conflicts. So other than the equipment database, I don't anticipate having to do too much outside-the-box editing to make the new project work.

I'm curious was there ever an American Civil war scenario made or adapted for TOAW4?

I'd like to see (and maybe there is) a scenario for a single front for a single year or less of campaigning at perhaps 1km/hex. At that scale, a big battle like Gettysburg stretches over several hexes, but you can still map the whole theatre and one could treat all artillery as R:1 without too much problem. One could have lots of temporary supply points available to the South by event to reflect the ability to live off the land but only for a limited period.

I'm just not convinced TOAW is the best engine to do a strategic level CW scenario because once you get to even 5km/hex every battle is just one stack banging away at another stack.

Well, you can judge for yourself. I just posted the scenario.

Looks interesting. I downloaded the file but the scenario was in Ceasefire mode and nothing happened.

I'm looking to create a similar scenario on a 5k map and custom weapons and graphic updates. Will be a major project but should be worth the effort....I hope!

I've got a large scale scenario I created on the JTS ACW series and hope it works here.

BRD!

There are no cease fire events in this scenario. What do you mean "nothing happened" ?

Hi Raindem,

I tried to attack at Ft. Sumter from either side for several turns and it wouldn't allow it. I check the events in the editor and it showed a CEASERFIRE in effect on turn 1 with 100% probability.

Here is the map I'm look to create to may my ACW scenario...

I'm looking to create the scenario/game to be custom to this TACW scenario. All images will be ACW related. Just starting the project and the OOB.

Are you sure you have the right scenario? Ft. Sumter is occupied by the Confederacy at the start of the game, so I'm not sure what you mean by attacking it from either side. The Union doesn't have any sea transport prior to Turn 5. Also be aware that units start out with static orders and are gradually released. If there is a cease fire event then the scenario must have been modified. I'm curious if anyone else has had this issue.

I agree... that is one MONSTER map. Good luck with your project.

Hi Raindem,

Here is a screenshot of the start of the scenario. US holds Ft. Sumter (?) and there is a ceasefire. It's the file from sPzAbt653 (AmericanC..865vB09.zip (1.08 MB) ) at the start of the thread.

I know the map looks huge but it's not too bad and cover the full ACW well. Only issue I'm having at the moment is trying to simulate the river transport of troops on the Mississippi. That should be shallow water and not deep water. Navel transport currently only works with deep water. Trying to find a creative fix.

Just to clarify for the unknowing.

The one Steve posted in one of the first posts of this thread is much different then Curt's.

The one Steve posted is called:
American Civil War 1861-1865 vB09

And per the doc is by a group of folks:

Scenario Designers:

1. Chuck – Created the map, event structure, and most of the Order of Battle (OOB).
2. Kerry – Modified the map, conducted historical analysis, and playtested the scenario.
3. Easily Confused – Playtesting.
4. RhinoBones – Playtesting, event testing.
5. Grant Whitley – Carolina geography and history analysis, playtesting.
6. Ben Turner – British history analysis, playtesting.
7. LaPalice – Playtesting (1863).
8. Hariman – Playtesting
9. Wolfe Tone - Playtesting
10. Tim McBride & Yves Le Rhun – ACOW Editor.
11. Curt Chambers – Opart Design and Debug Utility.

This particular scenario looks to be old and probably created a long while ago (I am using the modified file that Steve sent to me that fixes some of the events). Right off the get go, the South's flags are whacked (green flags, yes I put the folder in the right spot), and a bunch of units on the coast are out of supply (probably due to how the differences is TOAW III and IV are).

I am testing as the Union player and Fort Sumter's units can be moved, but they are out of supply (no USA supply point in that hex, should be though). There is several Theater Options, one of which is begin the war. So not sure what your issues is exactly on your end, just pointing that maybe the file Steve sent me corrects things.

The by Curt is called:
Nation in Conflict 1861

And is, well create by Curt.

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.a ... 2365533%3B

Just opening up Curt's is pretty awesome! Much more of a wow factor and he has a very well written document to go with the scenario. So it will take a while for me to chew on this. Bonus the South's flags are working, lol, lots to chew on...

I highly recommend Curt's.

Ay Carumba! I guess this somewhere emerged out of TDG as about half of the list there were members at one time or another, but I have no memory of it even though I managed to get credit in there (I'm sure for fairly dubious contributions).

LOL, one of my skills (or annoying features) is 'digger' as in digging into data and finding things...lol

The older one needs a lot of work. The South's flags are incorrect, some supply is missing and I am sure a few other minor tweaks would be needed.

But personally I'll just give Curt's a whirl.

Is there any grand tactical, regimental level, Civil War scenarios out there? I am thinking like the old SPI games TSS or GOB of the GBACW series?

If anyone does try the old ACW v09 scenario, please see my link earlier in this thread. I did a lot of investigation work into that scenario in TOAW IV and the short version = Very messed up. Many events did not transfer over correctly and there is no indication why. Some events run that aren't even *visible* in the editor or dump.
