I've got(had) both, plus The Eagle & The Sun!!!!
How stupid!!
Played Pacific War a fair bit, never to completion but the first 12ish months a few times.
WITP was a bit harder, played a bit but never had enough space long term. I'm sure the game is now landfill in Perth.
As for Eagle & the Sun, what potential, what a disaster.

I tried setting it up once. Overnight Catzilla moved in on Tokyo. Haven't tried to play it since. It's my understanding that it was a fantastic design for the time.
Operations and the shorter campaigns were very playable. The complete war campaign game was not as easy... the rules lacked on that point.

I think 2 different board games are being discussed here

SPI's War in the Pacific and Victory Games Pacific War - both great games that I played a lot of solitaire due to lack of rural opponents
Yeah, we are certainly discussing two monster games at once here. I think the OP edited his post to indicate he meant the title on the left.
The second edition of War in the Pacific was released a few years ago. I played the first edition a bit because a friend had both the space and the plywood sheets (it IS a monster).
Nowadays I would go for Empire of the Sun. Much more manageable.

OK Now I understand. I had the SPI game mounted it on the wall with sheet metal and magnetized 3200 pieces! The two sided counters of the Victory at Sea confused me. I tried to play several times before I learned to program.. Gave up! Too much paperwork![:(]

I still have them all; Both versions of War in the Pacific, Pacific War, Carriers,Flattop, Dauntless,Rising Sun, Eastern Fleet & Strike South to name a few! All classics to be sure. And I've owned just about every computer game covering the same topic. Starting with Grigsby's Carrier Strike that first came out for the Apple 2E!!! Yeah I'm that old and too darn lazy to set up 1000's of counters today.
That's why I'm looking forward to the soon to be released in June, "Carrier Battles" by Avalon Digital. It is the Desktop conversion from their IOS game Carrier Battles for Guadalcanal. It has captured the classic Pacific War Carrier Boardgames (like those I mentioned above)but for the computer. Amazing in terms of the tension and realism in WWII carrier battles. There's a couple of first looks over on YouTube. With this game coming out I think it's time for me to think about selling my classic boardgames.

I still have the SPI and VG games, both. Wrapped away probably forever. Never played Pacific War, although it looked like it had a lot to offer. I played SPIs War in the Pacific, once into June as IJ (time moved on, could not continue). Once as Allies through to the end. That one took a one car garage and about 2-1/2 years. My brother landed upon an India-conquest strategy that almost won the game by shortening the war. Shortening to the point where I never would've got to nukes. He ended up conceding, I was afraid he would commit hara-kiri. I had to bludgeon for all I was worth.

The one boardgame I kept from my Arizona storage area and shipped to Korea was the one on the left in Shellshock's photo. Sadly, I opened it up at my apartment and there were no unit counters. The box did contain a lot of plain black counters with white numbers, which my daughter has had great fun with.
Cheers,
CB

Oh yes, those were the "hit" counters. There was a whole counter sheet devoted to those. My copy of the game is long departed but more than a few of those lingered around for years in various storage trays.

I was wondering what those were. Those things have ended up all over the apartment. There might even be some left.
Cheers,

Try the second edition, its more expensive and more depth and details into it, but also much more expensive too. The only problems is that you will need to find a player or two to enjoy it.

Here is a picture of CoachZuck and I about to start a game many years ago. We started a few times, but never finished.
I remember when I was in High School, my mother was going into NYC for the day and I asked her to go to SPI and buy the game for me. She said that when she asked for it, they told her that it was a very complicated game and she replied that her son is very smart. Not sure who was right in this case...
Wow amazing pic. Thanks for sharing it. Now that makes me nostalgic!

Such is often the fate of those of us who actually enjoy these complicated simulations. But there is Vassal. And there will be conventions in future once this pandemic runs its course. Keep hope alive!

I owned both games at one point or another. Would have had one of the first of the SPI game except that my ship got deployed and it took so long to catch up with the ship that SPI sent me another complete game in the interim.
In either case one has to leave it set up to play it and certainly during the course of a single weekend (such as at a convention) neither could be played into 1945. Both were beautiful to admire though.

Well, if you didn't have the time or space or the inclination to read a voluminous rule book, there was always Avalon Hill's
Victory in the Pacific. Admirals...grab your dice and Yahtzee your way to victory.

There's also a magazine game made by SPI called USN which is smaller but just as complicated. It's how I got into wargaming around 1980 and still have it.

Heh. Good game. Doesn't have all the detail AE does but box size was limited.

I played Victory in the Pacific a few times. I also played the Atlantic one as well.
If I ever tried to play any of the monsters {Atlantic Wall, Terrible Swift Sword} the cat would win.
My dad picked me up from a library one night that was open to gaming. He almost single-handedly sank the Russian Fleet that had been maneuvered too close to the front door.
