Yes, they are/were entertaining. But if you want realism, watch a documentary.

Don't you know? That is the magic of television plus the ignorance of Americans on world geography. After all, they probably think that they have to go to England to go to London instead of Ontario, Big Canada Land, or to Italy to go to Rome instead of Georgia, USA.

WTF...why on Earth would you throw in a bigoted statement like that for a thread about a tv show? [&:]
It's because of people like you that threads get locked.
What an (expletive deleted).

Why? Because most Americans are ignorant of world geography.

That is not political or religious, that is truth. If anything, your last sentence is an insult.

Your prejudice is appalling. You are ignorant of most Americans and get your information from Youtube. You wouldn't know the truth if it walked up and smacked you in the face.

And this is highly political. You insult an entire nation of peoples because of your biased and prejudiced opinion, much like Hitler vs the Jews.

Great show. Surprisingly realistic for television in the sixties. The cost of war was well shown in the two part episode Hills are for Heroes. Highly recommended.

Hey come on you two. We've all been on here for a good while and I know both of you know better than to go this route. I know it can be very vexing. I've had my share of online issue though along time ago now as I try to keep a low profile these days. Plus I realised it doesn't matter what people online think of you as they truly don't know you and what type of person you are. Only people who really know you and you care about should you listen too if they have an issue.

So both you you stand back, breathe and let it go and then just stay out of each others way.

I have Combat and Rat Patrol on dvd (of course I do :) )

It's handy to note, you can watch Combat on YouTube.

I really liked Tour of Duty as well.

Realism? These were often one step away from fictional dramatizations I suppose. Always liked the actor that played the lead German officer in Rat Patrol. I know him as Victor of course.

Baa Baa Black sheep was fun.

Watched Rat Patrol and Black Sheep whenever they were on. And while McHale's Navy was more of a sitcom it did have some good WW2 scenes occasionally.

I knew someone who was a medic in France during WWII. He talked about the raw steak that he got at a restaurant and how his captain knew better than to send him to the front during the Battle of the Bulge - he could not stand the sight of blood!

Had a boss way back then was a first marine talked about Guadalcanal and the battles he was in. Sure underappreciated him at that time, wish I could go back and give him a big hug!!!!

A friends father was also a Marine at Guadalcanal but he never spoke of it. Many people won't even mention being in the military let alone what happened while there. Understandable.

I don't remember much but Dan did talk about, all I can remember is his radio took a bunch of bullets and he didn't! Unfortunately he has more than likely passed on.

Nowdays if I see an old person with a WWII veteran hat on I go up to them and thank them for their service. Did that before the pandemic at the Texas Roadhouse grill, man that old fellow was appreciative. Made my day.

Yes, it does.

The amazing thing is when you go up to these veterans and thank them for their service, they are so humble. Breaks my heart.

Just started watching the first season of Combat series. I don't think it was ever shown on UK TV. 32 episodes a season, that's alot.
Where are you watching that? I have been looking out for it for years...never could find it this side of the pond.

You should be able to find it in Youtube.
