With Japanese combined fleet being pottentially twice the size of Allied carrier force no amphibious operations planned untill August but by August we will have ;

Also we will have F6F Hellcat , SBD-5 and SB2C dive bombers on carriers instead of F4F Wildcats and SBD-3's.

Ambush at Magwe

Post by Evoken »

10 February 1943
We have been hitting the oil fields at Magwe for a few days , resistance was minimal and Allied bombers destroyed most of the oil with massed day bombings.

But today Andy has had enough and put up a cap near 700 strong
Image
Normally i stop offensive operations every few turns to not get cap trapped but it seems Andy Mac caught me this time [:D]

Poor Chinese DB-3's took the brunt of enemy cap but at least they were a good bullet sponge , weakened enemy cap significantly , which led to later sweeps mopping the floor with Japanese

Heavies over Port Moresby

Post by Evoken »

Feb 26 1943
Last turn recon over Port Moresby found 200 Fighters , 200 bombers at the airfield so i tought ; I have more heavy bombers than he has fighters lets not waste time and go in before fighters are in position
Australia airforce has been pretty dormant in the last month as Japanese are fully evacuating so we caught Japanese by surprise.

Reverse Pearl Harbor

Post by Evoken »

Feb 27 1943
Combined Allied Carrier force left Los Angeles for Pearl Harbor a week ago.
While approaching to Pearl harbor Death Star got spotted at 34 hexes from Pearl , almost made my cancel the strikes but lack of reaction from Andy Mac made me think maybe he isnt paying too much attention so i carried on , at 22 hexes Allied task forces swapped over to full speed and closed into 7 hexes from Pearl Harbor. Results are mixed , we got some ships but airwings took pretty heavy beating too.

I also got a large invasion force following behind by a day coming for Lahaina , weakest link in the Hawaii chain after Niihau Atoll but Lahaina can be built up to level 9 airfield. I am not sure if i should carry on with the invasion after carrier wings took pretty heavy losses

Hawaii Invasion

Post by Evoken »

March 2 1943
Allied doomstack arrived at Lahaina , at night a Japanese DD got through the surface combat forces and sank a CVE with torpedo strike. As main carrier force is sitting 1 hex NE of Lahaina , it was up to CVE's to protect the invasion forces at Lahaina , losing 1 CVE lead to more planes getting through the CAP and 4 more CVE's got hit by Japanese airstrikes 1 sank , 3 crippled.
We have landed 3400 AV at Lahaina all combat troops have low fatigue and disruption and they are ready to do a shock attack against 1 Japanese regiment , there is also 14 AA regiments , 500 engineers and 200 engineer vehicles , i plan to turn Lahaina into impregnable fortress to grind down Japanese forces at Hawaii

My partner Dutchy noticed Andy Mac was hitting troops around Akyab without any escort or sweeps so he setup a cap trap with heavy fighters , which worked very well even against Japanese Heavies

And Australian airforce continues hitting Port Moresby airfield with massed bomber formation

Also we got some very valuable intell this turn ,
CV Namika is moving to Wake Island (136,98). I believe Andy Mac is bringing all his carriers together for a counter strike , question is do we fight them with Land based air support or just retreat with majority of the fleet and leave it to 14 AA regiments stationed on Lahaina [:D]

March 4-10 1943
As the initial invasion action is dying down , Hawaii turned into minefield stand off. 4 Japanese submarines hit and sunk by mines at Pearl harbor while Allies lost a CL and DD to mines.
While bombarding Pearl Harbor BC Ranger hit an allied mine and took a lot of damage , she is now getting minor repairs. Large allied floating docks will arrive soon , i will send them to Lahaina for major repairs untill Pearl Harbor is captured.

A Japanese carrier force is approaching Johnston island i am not sure about the size but from amount of ASW strikes its flying against my subs i am gonna guess its the main combined fleet. Lahaina has 600 fighters at the moment i am bringing fighters halfway with carriers and flying them off to the base. Airfield level is 6 and increasing every few days , i believe we are ready for a fight at Lahaina if combined fleet comes in

It would be a mistake to bring your floating drydocks (ARDs) to the Hawaiian Islands before you have soundly defeated the IJN Carrier force. If they win a Carrier clash they can do to your port what you just did to PH.

Lahaina is a proper fortress , as airfield levels are increasing i am bringing more fighters in , there is a lot of surface combat task forces it is almost impsosible to bombard with ships and there is also 14 AA regiments each armed with 16x90mm AA guns , 32x40mm bofors and 48x.50 cal AA guns , this is without counting the AA from base forces and other units. When it reaches level 9 airfield it will be very hard to get through the combat air patrol with carrier force alone , the whole island chain is getting bombarded daily (laying mines at Pearl harbor was a mistake from me 2 more CL and 1 CA hit friendly mines this turn)

Ouch , 2 CL and 1 CA are pretty badly damaged
I guess i will have to stop bombarding Pearl Harbor because Mk16 mines really hurt.
All the enemy mines around Pearl have been swept , i have a dedicated minesweeper there but cant seem to sweep my own mines. I have deployed over 800 mines at Pearl is there anyway to stop my ships from hitting my own mines or did i just do a huge blunder and give enemy a minefield i cant do anything about ? [:D]

Usually your own ships know about your minefield the day after you lay it - but I have never made a minefield that large. Or should I say minefields - 800 is a lot to lay in one go, so you have probably been laying mines every day for some time. Every day you lay a minefield your ships must wait a day to become aware of it. The AI keeps track of minefields by the date they are laid, the type and the numbers laid or decayed.

I brought a lot of minelaying ships with me , laid it all in one go.My ships hit mines on 3 seperate days too , i think i made a huge mistake here [:D]
Also KB is coming out to play , pacific ocean itself is a living minefield filled with submarines , its only a matter of time

Looks like KB will go to Johnston Is. to refuel before heading to the PH area.

March 14 1943
The Great PT boat slaughter
I had 72 PT Boats at Lahaina , i have set them up to intercept enemy ships if they come close to Pearl , i did the same thing for the surface combat task forces ; all on patrol order with 6 reaction range , agressive leaders , direct routing and absolute threat tolerance , a lot of planes for both night and day naval search (30+ planes for each phase all with radar). PT Boats reacted to enemy and engaged the enemy while my surface ships sat on their asses at Lahaina in both day and night phases , enemy came in and parked at Lanai 1 hex from Lahaina and they still didnt react. As a result enemy have sunk about 50 PT Boats and got into pearl harbor to rearm. I am seriously annoyed by this , if my ships reacted properly it was my best chance to do massive damage to Japanese surface fleet.

Anyways we are going all out assault on Pearl to try to bombard it , Andy Mac parked about 1400 planes there in 1 turn , if i cant bombard it this turn it will make Hawaii opeartion really hard as Lahaina is not level 9 airfield yet and its already overstacked to hell cant risk bringing more planes.

Also when you have crazy amount of airplanes on both sides it seems sweeping is really important as escorts against cap doesnt work too well , as you can see both sides took very heavy losses on bombers ;

this is more of a mod problem as we are dealing with 1945 amount of planes in 1943
