I do wonder why the 4 morale.. think he was just a victim of circumstance, not demoralised...

I think you may be missing my point, which is what he said and did was not UNCOMMON at that time in the German Army, but rather the norm.

Professional soldiers are not necessarily the good guys. The Roman Army army was very professional, disciplined, and well trained (depending on the era) and one of the most brutal in history.

It's not like the Soviet Army had much of a moral high ground to stand on either considering what Stalin had done to date.
