If the Japanese attacked Hong Kong that day, that would be enough reason for Canada to declare war - officially allowing the Canadian troops to fight back. (I'm sure they were already!)ORIGINAL: MateDow

I found an interesting bit of history 2 days ago re. the Canadian declaration of war against the Japanese. They declared war before the PH attack and also without the parlament [8D]
Canada declared war on Japan on the night of 7 December, not before the attack on Pearl Harbor. What rationale would they have had in declaring war before the attack? They did declare war before the US though, and the UK for that matter.
