Interesting theoretical question. A platform designed to kill armor wouldn't have too much to do in Vietnam, at first glance. a 30mm tankbusting weapon would be overkill against peasants with AK-47s. I think the biggest problem in Vietnam was finding targets; without precision munitions, the US often resorted to "area" weapons - large iron bombs, napalm, B-52s, etc. The NVA did have some SAM capabilities as well.

The question that I keep coming back to is what could the A-10 do in Vietnam that armed helicopters, F-4s/F-105s, and area bombers couldn't?

The A-10 would have been doing basically the same job as the A-1. Low/slow/heavy hitter. It was faster, but prop planes are usually a little more resistant to critical damage.
