The same thing is said about BattleTech. Core rule book, Total Warfare, exceeds 300 pages.

Check out RBM Studio's Gettysburg on steam. Very small map and large unit scale of the battle. Haven't bought it myself but saw a review and the author had 20+ hours in and was singing the games praises.
