I'd probably vote against that then. Engine explosions only give me problems when I make bad tactical decisions (or when my cyborgs just can't help themselves).

Well, when the engine explodes the shield is supposed to power down. Also, in explosions by heat, the shield *is* powered down due to the engine shutting down. I don't think the exploding titan's shield should be a factor.

Wait a mintue. Why would a shield prevent damage to a jock from his exploding titan? Wouldn't a shield surround a Titan, therefore when it explodes the force of the blast has no where to escape to, thus containing the blast within the shield and directly onto the Titan and Jock? The shield would protect other titans in the area, but not the exploding one. Kind of like putting a firecracker in a can, the can acts as a shield to protect the outside world from the explosion. The inside of the can takes tremendous punishment, but not the outside world.

The question was wether a shield surrounding an exploding titan reduces damage for those nearby. This idea is now discarded.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, Intruder.
But seeing as the shield is powered (or WAS powered) by the exploding engine, it wouldn't make much sense for the shield to do any good containing the explosion. It seems more logical to imagine that most systems would go offline in the split second
before the engine blew as opposed to the split second
after.

A good question. And what exactly is the amount of damage reduction for a titan with his shield up when he's caught in a dying titan's blast radius? I assume it's dependent on the shield quality, but what is the base calculation?

Shield reduce the explosion by their protective value. A shield with 40% protection would reduce damage by 40%.
In addition the have a protection value/2 chance to negate radiation damage by explosions.

hrm, what I would like to see is the ability to voluntarily shut down your engine. Hit the big red kill button, 3 seconds later, your Titan's engine is cold.
I have in several cases been in situations where I'm getting the snot pounded out of me, and I don't want ot eject (due to low health, and a failed ejection probably killing the jock),where I'd gladly lose the Titan to engine destruction instead of losing the jock I'd spent several battles building up.

This is an excellent idea. If you were riding around on a reactor, you would definitely want a big scram switch on your cockpit console.

Not if his life is so low that he would die. No one wants to be a Goose, they all want to be Maverick. I too like the idea of being able to shut down.

I don't like it but you already expected this, right ? It would take some thrill out of the game and the AI would use it too. This would greatly reduce the option of engine explosions and would eleminate a tactical element.

I love the freakin explosions. I only wish I could voluntarily make the jocks blow up their titans, especially when it's a nice rookie in a heat-generating titan like that Fireball recon titan. Especially when the foolish enemy decides to send tons of heavy close combat titans. Hey, suicide bombers exist in real life, so why not it ToS? The manual seems to mention that you can try to do one with the eject button or something, but I just can't seem to figure out how

But I say, lower the engine explosion damage and range. It's not realistic. Sure they may be nuclear engines, but 10*power and 2 km radius?? At least lower the damage by half...
And I think the shut down engine would be a good idea, especially when you're being rammed with a bunch of titans with napalm missiles. Just make it so that it won't get back up in battle and has a 120% cooling rate, instead of instantly cooling down in 3 seconds. Should balance things a bit.

Custom jocks with 60+% survival and damage control can choose to blow up their titan when ejecting. Ejecting will take 2 to 3 times longer though, and it's not a given that the engine will actually explode.
2 km radius?! nope, 2 hexes radius, that's 666m.
The engine being shutdown doesn't prevent it from exploding. So no real point there.

Ah, sorry, I mistook 1 hex as one km. And I thought that engine explosions only occur at very high temperatures (according to what I understand from the manual) or if they get destroyed. And I think I've seen a few times when the engine of my titan was destroyed but it wasn't blown up. Assumed there was some link between heat and engine explosions...

Hmm, some miscommunication there. Engine explosions happen by high temp (250C), the engine being destroyed (possibly) and self-destruct (possibly). The engine, when destroyed, *might* explode, depending on a series of factors like jock's damage control skill and DCS system if any. The chance the engine will explode is somewhere between 50~98%, depending on the above factors. If you want more detail, check the guide.
