There's a good article from Proceedings regarding Hope's letter about Midway that he wrote in 1946.

Hornet's air unit performance was abysmal in battle.

They didn't score single bomb or torpedo hit in whole battle, so there is that. Plus got all their VT unit destroyed.

Not lack of trying, but performance was really bad compared to others.
