regarding "carrier" bombardment

well, maybe they can...since i've seen this game give aussie fighter-bomber aircraft pilots credit for a sub engagement, transported japanese troops on allied aircraft, seen medium bombers on a carrier (described, if i recall correctly, as a fighter), totally ignore attacking a fair size invasion force (just off the shore of its target in clear weather and yes...the ai could have attacked...i looked), totally freeze sub taskforces that have more than one member, "retreating" transport taskforces in reaction the existance an enemy carrier force however far it is from bisbane to just southeast of lae and...well, guess most of us have seen this and more. however, it may not have been clear...the target (ijn) had carriers...the "intercepting" forces did not (CA, CL, DD) with just about every available, computer-controlled sub close by. for what it is worth though, i've also seen the ijn...with carriers...get within a few hexes of gili-gili while "something" bombarded it during the game turn.

Hi, I use my surface fleet extensively and fight many surface battle either day and night, in open sea or at bases.

I use bombardment TF to target a given hex on open sea (to intercept cripples or a transport TF) because it's assures that my TF will end his night move here, fight, and then dash at full speed towards base.
If you use a surface TF and give it a destination in open sea with retire orders, I figure that if the TF has enough movement points it will go to this point and then begin to return to base during the night phase. It seems to me that these TF made fewer intercepts.

But such actions are quite efficient.

I just a PBEM turn where I sent three Allied TF with a dozen cruisers and 30 DD sweep waters south of Gili GIli while a Japanese invasion fleet of Port Moresby is retiring in July 1942. Should be a bloody night if things went as excepted.

I have had a great deal of success in open water interception using Surface Combat TFs.

I have not had to use the bombartment TF technique.

I do not beleive it is neccessary if your TF has the movement points and fuel required.

Having fuel is important. Do not underestimate the effects of low fuel on long moves away from the home base.

You got me on some of those open sea engagements. :(

That first game had a lot of vicious surface battles, particuarly around Irau. :D

Can't wait for WitP.

When are we going to hoist a brew now that I live in the NVA?

What mission/orders are you giving the surface fleet that is making the open water intercepts and engagements? Can you elaborate more on how you do this? Do you just give as the destination hex the open water hex?

Thanks

Well. I don't drink - but you are welcome to come for dinner any time! You just missed my delicious fried chicken yesterday.
