i came across a website dedicated to a naval game where when you joined you had to attend an officer's candidate school where you went through exercises on the various facets of the game. After you "graduated", you were allowed into the main arena of players where all the big dogs were. I don't think we have to go that far, but its an idea to throw out.

These are all great ideas!

jonhooper: You are exactly the kind of player this meant for. Most of us had to just "feel" our way along, figuring things out on our own. It's doubly hard if you haven't played SP before. This game is like chess - easy to learn but hard to learn the "nuances" of.

degen: I've made friends from Canada, Brazil and Finland here, but I'm amazed to find somebody from little ol' Elk Grove. Been blacked-out yet? I haven't yet.

RUsco: Those things are great, but I don't think they'll go in the first one. The one I'm doing here will be about flanking, tank action and a little bit of town fighting, with artillery and maybe airpower thrown in. And whatever else I can stick in. I'm already planning on doing more than one, because of the need and all the great ideas.

Drex: Maybe the best idea I've seen yet! Some kind of Bootcamp that would have class and mini-scenarios to teach all different things. Wow. Way beyond the scope of my thinking here, but if different people got together and made these scenarios they could be put together on someone's website. Man that is great!

I really, really appreciate all the feedback, and there is obviusly a need for these. I'll start work on the first one right away, with hopefully more to come. I will talk to Fabio, my teammate on this, and work out what we will do.

Here is my plan for tutorials:

As Bonzo is doing for CL, I would like to set up a number of small mini-scenarios covering one subject each, accompanied by a text file. A rookie player could work on one subject until he is satisfied that he knows it, and have alot of them to choose from.

Right now I have someone to do one on artillery (thanks Bing), and Fabio will do one on taking on a Tiger with a Sherman (or Shermans). I will probably do something like taking on bunkers.

All you veterans out there, I need help. I need you to pick a subject that you know well, and do a small scenario on it. I will supply a map if needed. I don't even care if several people do the same subject - one person may cover things another one didn't.

This not a rush job - if you can help out it doesn't have to be right away. If you think you can help anytime in the near future please let me know.

Let's give the benefit of our knowledge - this is something that will be used alot for a long time to come.

Thanks Bonzo, for the inspiration.

Another possible suggestion is to provide these tutorial scenarios with a copy of the last turn in the VCR buffer.

That way the student can see the tactic in action!!

RUsco, thank you! How big of a map do you think? 40x40? 50x50? Let me know and I will make one up. You can email me too.

Reg, I don't really understand what you're saying, probably because I've never used the VCR function. Would you explain, either here or by email?

Thanks alot, guys!

Don-

Yes, I was surprised also to see someone else from Elk Grove. Given the diversity of locations on this forum it is quite a coincidence! Hope this project goes well for you. There seems to be a real need for it and it would be fun to have some short limited scope scenarios to play. I have not tried to design a scenario, so I probably can't help you on that end. I could help you on some limited playtesting if needed. Let me know.

Yes please.
Another more advanced tutorial can only make this great game better so that us FNG's Image can play it beter & have a chance against some of the vets. Image

Btw Don, no blackouts for us either. Have seen alot of darkened offices and hallways at work though. But I still see people and business with lights on at night. Doesn't make sense given power crisis we are in.

For those of you who have not heard, electric power deregulation is a colossal failure in California (these are the governor's words for it!). You think that electricity is a given and that it would not be a worry in the US, but leave it to the politicians to find a way to screw it up. There doesn't seem to be a quick fix to the problem, so we will be dealing with it for quite a while. Really looking forward to that hot summer...

k1w1, they are coming! I've got 5 vets lined up, plus myself, to put out some tutorials. I will work on snagging some more volunteers, and especially find one who will do the big lesson - C&C.

degen - the funny part of the whole power thing is I have 21 years with PG&E, and they asked for this big time when they wanted de-regulation. They wanted it SO bad, and now that it failed they want the people to pay their losses. I called the PUC and said to let 'em go broke - they got what they wanted and it failed. Why should the people pay for that? Plus, the PG&E utility is only part of a much larger company that is spread nation-wide, so they are not going broke as a company. Enough ranting!

Hi Drex,

You've had some great comments and suggestions here, and I went to email you to talk about some of these things. I used the email address in your profile, and got it back as undeliverable. Do you have another email address? Or just email me - I'd like to talk to you.
