So how ya gonna fly those P-38s down there, pal? Or does this mean that the surface of the globe will be only a secondary theater to the rather Jules Vernian nether realms? Will we see the Fw-7900 "Screw-nosed earth mole" in action?

I'd vote YES on that topic! Love to see it happen. Wasted plenty of time playing the original and would gladly do it again with a new version.

I believe that the just-announced port of WiF puts paid to any notion of global WitP...

Computer version of WiF still shows a release date of October 2000. I'm pretty sure its vaporware.
EDIT:
That's what I get for having a hotlink to the forums and skipping the main page. Now I see that Matrix is doing the WiF computer game. Terrific! What do you think the development time will be 18 months? 24 ?

Funny enough, taking a board game and simply shifting it to computer is quite simple. General board games are quite simple and crisp from a formula/rule standpoint to develop code to deal with.
Where it dies is when people try and add some form of AI. Thats probably what happened to WiF. AI is generally the failing of ever game produced in the last 20 years.

Wasn't there a plan to release WiF without an AI - a PBEM or hotseat only game? I thought that was a great idea (even though I played UV solo for months before going the PBEM route).

I've been a World in Flames fan for years. I finished a complete game back in 1997 with a friend in a two player game, it took us 6 months playing 2 times a week to finish. Simply an awesome and huge game.
I've also played with the computer version. There has been (was?) an open beta for the many months, all programmed by Chris Marinacci, which was playable enough that many AAR's were posted that covered a large portion of an entire game.
It is simply a huge project for one man to program, let alone do graphic design and artwork. Chris did a wonderful job and according to his post to the WiF discussion group will be consulting with matrix games on the project.
Having followed both computer WiF and matrix games for years now, this announcement excites me and I look forward to seeing the completed game. That is if I am not killed by the sheer weight of WiTP.
Thank you for listening, I will now take further WiF discussion to the WiF forum, as soon as there is one.

Global WW2 in UV/WitP-scale/detail/accuracy/etc. but in 'continuous time' mode like the GNB-series! Will delete the PBEM-option, but then there is online gaming...

Well kind of a draw. The axis invasion of russia was done conservatively and didn't penetrate as deep as historical, and the allied effort concentrated on Europe causing Berlin to fall in Sept/Oct 44. A mistake due to inexperience led to the very early loss of Truk to the US, which made Japan much less of a threat. The US concentrated on Europe after that, losing focus on the pacific too much, so by spring 45 there was a LOT of work to be done before Japan could be invaded and beaten. The game was ended by mutual agreement at the end of Jul/Aug 45, and we set up for a new game which we never made much progress on as life invaded our schedule.

Why did you come back out (other than to buy more beer, of course)?
Cold Beer

Hi, I have a little Haier fridge in my room (my chair has wheels and it takes 3 pushes to reach the fridge) But I have to go outside to smoke.

While I like the idea, and think that there is a nice empty spot in my study that could really use a beer fridge, this would be a disaster for me. The march downstairs to refuel myself is often the only thing that keeps the blood circulating. If I had beer within htree pushes of my wheely chair (or arms reach as I'd plan it) I'd be a worse gamer than ever anyway.

Hi, I would prefer the fridge to be underneath my computer but power outlets decided where it was located. I didn't want too many machines using the same outlet. The fridge draws too much current to share the board with the TV, Monitor, Computer. Besides I need the excersie. (push 1,2,3 Pull 1,2,3 twist, and lift 1,2,3 (12 ounce curls) lift 1,2,3 )
(Beer makes you smart)
