My priority, in order, has always been Nouema, Brisbane, Townville/Charter-Towers, Rockhampton, Efate Port Vila, Luganville. Losing Nouema is losing the game. Losing Brisbane makes the game all most impossible. Losing Townville and Charter-Towers makes it extremely dificult. The others can be delt with with ascending possibilities. Usually, losing Luganville is not a problem if you do not lose too many CVs and CAs. It is possible to take it back while keeping it bombed into the stone age. It is much easier if you can hold Efate Port Vila as well.

To take Noumea is one thing, to keep it is another. It is difficult to supply Noumea as long as the allies have Brisbine and the planes and troops that keep coming in. The good thing about taking Noumea is if you do lose it, the Allies reinforcement schedule is delayed for at least 2 months. I took Noumea and had 100000 pts of fuel and still my CVs ran out and I had to abandon Noumea to its fate.

Got some to kill in between waiting for turn files to come in so decided to write a reply to this. And seeing neuromancer's all raring to go again in his new games, I thought it'd be safe to say some things now.

Hee...[:D] You should consider all moves in the light of your in-game objectives. In my case, I was aiming for psychological knockout. If taking Noumea didn't totally demoralise neuro, I would have gone after Luganville and Efate as well (all only 1 regt+engr defending).

neuro was right, the 3rd AID couldn't have retaken Noumea. I had 5 regts sitting on it, and then some. The best he could hope for was to hold Koumac and slug it out with me. But first he had to get his APs past the Death Star. In order to do that, he'd have to commit his CVs, which were the last effective Allied naval force left in the theater (a key point, it's still June '42). I was willing to trade, knowing that I still had reinforcements coming via Truk, whereas he'd have to retake Noumea to get his ships from PH. He realised it was no-win and caved.

Conclusion? The Japs cannot be allowed even near Noumea early in the game, unless it's a major trap. Brisbane is too far West to supply the bases South of the Solomons. Late in the game? Don't think the Japs can pull it off by then.
