I will appreciate an update of the assault database were most of them get at least shield1. Unshielded assaults are just easy prey for decent plasma opposition. While fighting assaults your jocks energy skill should be high enough to do called shots. Each time I fight assaults without shields I can kill them easily with my squad of 6 plasmas.

What about having 6+ GCs? Shields won't help there. The only significant difference is range is shorter. Maybe it's the PGs that have too much range? Or need to recycle even slower?

Its not the PG IMO. Its the lack of shields for some assaults. I have GCs in my team and they are no replacement for PGs. They are a very welcome addition. My best titans has PG, LL, GC and AC12 + LMG and EMP. Its a best of both worlds titan. I'm just talking about my battlefiled experience when our team is happy to meet a Devastator or Kraken as they are easy prey as soon as our PG heros have a green scan on them. They don't survive long enough to empty half of their ammunition. We also have a Devastator on our team too but I immediatly removed some LRM for a decent shield. I also think ANY short or medium range assault should have a shield. Otherwise they have a hard time reaching a good firing distance at all. Shield are made to counter energy weapons. Energy weapons are standard. Assaults should take this into account. They have the capacity to field a shield1 and should do so. I admitt that this is more important while fighting the AI with a high rank squad. There are combat situations were shields are dead weight.

My point was, 1 on 1, it's not really a problem. Ganging up, 6 GCs or 6 LRM12s or whatever are a problem just the same. It's not just 6 PGs. And there are always the standard counters, ECM, jump, dodge, woods/cover,... Shields are natural counters to energy weapons, yes, but that doesn't mean you can't improvise and adapt.
Shields require additional power and heat dissipation. You don't take damage but you take heat instead. They can be a liability, or simply dead weight like you said.
If you take into account that not everyone plays 8 titan teams, and hero jocks, and only-assault teams, 12 out of 33 isn't that bad. [;)] IMO of course.
As for Devs and Krakens, they *should* have pals keeping threats away - they are supports after all.

I agree here, but I also think the Sodom and the Vertigo and the more I think about it, the Banshee would be better designs in general with some shields. The Vertigo and Banshee because of thier mid-range nature and the the Sodom... well 'cause it can, with not too much ill effect (I think the shield is better then what it loses) All these already have a power/HR set up that can accomidate a shield. the Devestator.. LOL.. on top it being a 'pure' support titan, it don't even have enough engine to run it's ECM if it's running now.[:D]
Overall I think it would be a good idea to trim down the number of assaults without shield if the pre-existing design can handle it without too much tampering. Maybe get the shieldless titans down to 7-8?

Just keep a couple of Ancient Mariners or Mountain Giants around, plasmas just have this thing about mesons [;)]

It means, more or less, "annoyance that drives one to insanity" - or something like that anyway. :)
