Still curious if I can get better pilots for the F4F4's (see above post).

You would need to merge the squadron with another full-up squadron of F4F4's at the same base (just select "Withdraw group" on the airgroup command screen). The planes will be assigned to the other air group. Because it is overstrength, next turn those aircraft will go into the replacement pool and will be available to upgrade your carrier group.
Two caveats: make sure that no one ELSE flying F4F-3s is set to upgrade, or they may upgrade before your carrier group. Also, in UV the AI sometimes upgrades units in the reinforcement pipeline, and there isn't anything you can do about that. I haven't seen it in WitP, but be ready to howl with rage if this is so! [:D]
