I was just Peking at the forums with I noticed this thread. Nice to see a thread where people aren't getting Hanoi'd over aircraft production. They raise such a Hue and cry. At least it was over aircraft and not a Truk. It's not as if anyone's telling a Lae, otherwise it'd be time to Batan down the hatches. Wake up will you, and try to meet each other Midway.

Wotje think everyone?

As my mother said to me the other day when she was in her Wellingtons and Bikini, "would you like a Port, Arthur?" "No, just Buru some tea" was my reply. But that's another story.

PS. Sorry about my bad Taiping, maybe I'll get better Lucknow I've posted this.[;)]

ROFL! Very clever![:D]

They raise such a Hue and cry.

Hate to be a stickler [:D], but isn't "Hue" pronounced "Way" (opening up a myriad of possibilities!), similar Vietnamese boggler is "Nguyen" pronounced "Win"

No Hue, I Nguyen! [:D]

In regards to French frigate shoals, you might be suprised to know that
lore on the island indicated that the area was discovered several hundred years ago by a French Naval Officer, Jean comte de la Perouse, who literally stumbled onto the area by accident and spent several months shipwrecked on the shoal until the crew could repair the ship.
During the early part of the war, the Japanese occasionally used it to refuel seaplanes from a submarine. In one instance a seaplane raid on Pearl Harbor was refueled from this location. When they tried to do this again, after the Battle of Midway, they found that a complete Naval Air Station had been constructed by the U.S. That attack plan was cancelled. The shoal was now an important emergency stopover and navigational point for aircraft flying between Hawaii and Midway.

I like it as Gili Gili. Maybe they could add Milne Bay to the map, if it's not on there already?

I miss Hoskins from UV. That name sounds so ... British.

My favorites are Pago Pago, Gili Gili, and Sag Sag. Sag Sag sounds like what will happen to my waistline if I keep playing this game 24/7. :)

Here I am with the linguistics thing again. Giling is a noun in Tagalog meaning "grinding." Which leads to what asking for "giling giling" will get you in the PI... [:D]

PS Gili is another noun meaning "a rolling motion with the hand"....

Pisanuloke.

First time I saw it with the corner of my eye and read "Pissanuloke", with an extra S.
Nothing weird in that for a foreigner... but in finnish "Pissan uloke" would mean about "Ledge of piss"

"Badenough Island" already was the setting for an opera, (not to mention it's frequent mention in "Rocky and Bullwinkle") so they had to use a variation on that name.

Actually that's an opera called "Boris Godunov" by Gergiev and Rocky and Bullwinkle played off that. While not a real fan of Rocky and Bullwinkle I really appreciate their double layered humor - one for the kids and one for the parents - Shrek was very good that way too. The kids were laughing at one place in the movie and the adults at another.

No no no. You hca fallen into a common mistake for those unfamiliar opera. "Boris" was actually a parody of the earlier opera "The Pearl Fishers go Hawaiian" which was set in Badenough Island. Bizet had a vacation home there. (Bizet was a big fan of Deep Sea Fishing. Which explains a lot). The Pearl Fishers go Hawaiian was remade yet again in the 1960s as one of the Gidget movies.

And Oleg's #1 favorite placename in WITP is, ta-daam:

01. Siemrem Reap [&o][&o][&o]

The name of the place is actually Siem Reap and means "Thailand is defeated" in Khmer
(language of the inhabitants of cambodia)

Stayed there for a few days in 2000 because of the magnificent Angkor ruins nearby.

regards,
Gunnar

Spinach Spinach

Oh yeah, as in "Chicken Sagwala". But that is in Indian. This is on/near New Guinea. Does it mean the same there? Is it really Indian? Polynesian seems more likely given the characteristic repetition of the sylables.

Hi there is also an Opera Boris Godunov by Modest Mussorgsky. The Libretto is based on Alexander Pushkin's play by that title. I've always liked Mussorgsky because he was a soldier who drank too much and on the side produced wonderful music.
