@joey: your avitar looks like it is shot in Pearl Harbor. Correct?
I have seen similar sights while enroute to Arizona Memorial.

I've been tracking memory usage for the past few days (I suspect there's a nasty memory leak somewhere, but want more evidence before I actually post it). My games usually start around 200M of usage, then rapidly increase to about 350M (it seems it does this as I scroll around giving orders the first turn...almost like it only loads the map details as needed. I.e., until you look at Australia, Australia's not held in-memory. Don't know if that's true...but that's what it looks like so far). So far, I've seen it go as high as 425M.
So yes, upgrading to 512M should definitely help. As far as anything else...I've got it on two machines, a dual-400MHz processor with half a gig of RAM, where it fairly crawls, and a 1.8MHz laptop with a full gig of RAM, on which it screams.

Running Witp on a Dell 3GHZ with 512M of Ram, turns take less then 5min with combat animations on, all message delays set to .05 sec.

It really makes a big difference to shorten the message-delay times. The default delay (what is it, 3 seconds? 2 seconds?) seems interminable to me now. Change it all to 1.0 seconds or less! Of course, you have to be a bit accustomed to the game to do this, but it shouldn't take long. I can whiz through the typical replay in about 8 minutes on my desktop, 10 minutes on my slower laptop.

everything off
shortest breaks in reporting
sth like 2 min on Athlon 2.5 + 0.5Gb
too little to make a break for a tea [:D]

Not that I have found the time to play since the kid has been born, but...
reports on, combat display on and off (depending on whether a big fight is expected), shortest breaks on air-2-air, ground, bombardment, 0.5 seconds for sub, surface, air-to-surface
still 8 minimum minutes on a P4-2Gig - I know it's the RAM, 256k is laughable...
But well, gave me time to play Civ or PacWar on the Laptop during the resolution phase - did the same to bridge the time it took to end the battle and respawn my character in 'America's Army', 'cause I was always the first to die... [:o][:@][:D]
Well, those were the good old days. Okay, back to changing diapers
