I was just thinking about Iraqu and realized something. Iraqu goes back to the dawn of recorded history. Hammurabis code is the first written law and written law is one of the foundations that underpins modern society, without it you can't have a modern democracy.
But in all its long history Iraqu has never had an election. At least not until a bunch of guys like Scott showed up and 8 million very brave people gave the (purple dyed) finger to the terrorists who said "if you vote, we will kill you."
Its a pretty amazing thing, to write the laws in 1750 BC have the concept change and travel to all over the world and then be brought back for the first vote in a countries history.

The first parliamentary elections since Iraq became a republic in 1958 were held in June 1980, and the First National Assembly convened at the end of that month. Baath Party candidates won 75 percent, or 187, of the 250 seats. The remaining 25 percent were won by parties allied with the Baath and by independent parties. Elections for the Second National Assembly were held in October 1984. Approximately 7,171,000 votes were cast in that election, and the Baath won 73 percent (183) of the seats. Thirty-three women were elected to the assembly.
