Well, my fist bombing mission against Kuching went well. Got a coordinated strike out of Singapore (Blenheims, Hudsons), Singkawang (Brewsters, Demons), and Balikpapan (Brewsters, Martins). Looks really cool in the replay. I haven't actually got the turn yet, just the replay, so I don't know how much damage I really inflicted or had inflicted on me. I hope the Martins are not too tired. Or the Brewsters for that matter. I want to make these bombing raids a daily occurance. I will need lots more supply for that. Hopefully some will be arriving shortly from Trincomalee and Darwin.

One of his transports I torpedoed last turn sank this turn. Plus, he lost a sub.

I got a spotting report on two TFs heading for Davao. Marblehead, Boise and an escort of DDs are lurking south of Davao to intercept. They have not been spotted! I have no I idea what he is escorting this invasion with. I may chicken out. But I doubt it. [;)] Also, I still don't know where his CVL is. That could be a problem. Since he looks like he is two days out from Davao, I may bring Doorman up to support the interception.

Well after I got the actual turn in I found that I had destroyed 6 zeros on the ground at Kuching and one in air to air. (Now I have this swelled-headed dutch pilot strutting around the airodrome at Balikpapan like he was the cock of the walk telling everybody at least 5 times how he shot down a zero flying a Brewster [8|]) Unfortunately, the roll over text says I only caused 25 damage to the runway. So we are going in again. I am resting a few of the groups, but some of the others are going for another ride. I suppose my op losses are going to be rather high, but I feel I have to close down Kuching. One thing though--he doesn't appear to have any Nells or Betties there yet. Perhaps he wants to establish air surpemacy first.

He also moved some air units into Tavoy. This is bad news as I have a supply convoy heading from Trincomalee to Rangoon. I need those supplies. I will keep the convoy on track for now. I will have to move the AVG in to protect them when they get close. I have been thinking about splitting up the AVG to cover more bases--in Java, Singapore and Rangoon. I would like to start transfering fighters out of the PI but I don't have enough political points for that at the moment.

He has moved a bunch of planes into the PI. I have no idea what his intentions there are. Grotius seems fixated on Naval attack. Certainly I haven't seen any kind of bombing campaign yet. Staging Nells and Betties in Legaspi for attacks on shipping in the Celebes Sea is my biggest concern at the moment because - - -

I am trying to set up an ambush of his invasion of Davoa. He is 5 hexes out from Davao right now. This may mean he will be sending in a bombardment TF first. I don't want to repeat my mistake from last time and just intercept the bombardment group. I really want to hit the transports. So I had the Houston TF refuel and head to a spot 6 hexes south of Davao. I also set react to only two hexes. This will put them in position for a run into Davao tomorrow night. Of course, I am playing cat and mouse here. He hasn't spotted me yet, but he may tomorrow. He may have a CVL present with Kates. Only 2 TFs show up on the map, but the way they are positioned in the hex tells me there is at least one more. Depending on whether the hypothetical CVL is following the invasion fleet, this would put them outside torpedo range from my staging area. If said hypothetical CVL should move south to cover the invasion, however, I could be in for some hurt! And then there is the issue of how he will react to my presence if he is on the verge of invading, yet spots me before he starts the actual landings.

There is also a possibility that there is another, unsighted TF heading for Menado. I got a radio intercept yesterday that was in a place that would have been along an odd path from Palau to Davao. Also, it is only 3 hexes from where his TFs were spotted today. That might be because he had to refuel some short legged MSW escorts. Or it could point to another invasion force. Just in case, I set the Houston group's react range to 2.

Meanwhile, Doorman and company are going to refuel before joining in the fun. I would have preferred for them to go in with the Houston group, but the Dutch destroyers simply don't have that much endurance. I was afraid they might chose an inopportune moment to refuel. So they will race in the following night (assuming things work out) for a follow up performace.

I continue to play cat and mouse with his invasion fleet off Davao. They only moved two hexes from yesterday's turn. Is he timing his landing? What showed as 3 TFs yesterday now shows as 4. I believe one may include his CVL. (does he have more than one CVL by this point?) The Houston group is moving west to avoid the possibility that this group has carriers in it. Since the landing may commence during the day tomorrow, I have set my reaction range for the Houston group to 4. This way they will not react to Davao, but will react to Menado should he invade there. The Houston group still has not been spotted. [8D] They will make their run into Davao tomorrow evening.

Force Z has reloaded at Sorebaja and is now headed into the Celebes Sea. I believe they should make it in time to still hit some of his transports unloading at Davao.

Doorman has refueled and is now heading for a spot 2 hexes southwest of Menado. This should avoid the possibility of being spotted. The following day he will set up for a run into Davao. I actually wanted to bring Doorman up to Menado so that he and the Houston group could both run into Davao at the same time. But I couldn't get any fighters to Menado. I paid to change one warhawk sqdrn in the PI to ABDA command with the intention of transferring it to Menado. But after I paid the points I found that they couldn't fly that far. [8|] So I moved them to Tarakan for now. (I am back down to 0 political points.)

The way things stand right now, I may be able to hit the Davao invasion 3 night in a row: first night Houston, et. al.; second night Doorman; third night Force Z.

I transfered the AVG from Singapore to Rangoon. I have a supply TF coming in. It will arrive in 3 days. The AVG gets one day of rest, then they start CAPing the supply force.

Grotius has stationed two surface forces 5 hexes out from Kuching. Plus he has some subs in the area. He obviously is expecting me to bombard. I actually would mind hitting his BB task force again. I don't think they have reloaded from their previous surface engagement and bombardment, so they could be rather vulnerable, especially without torps. But I will not risk rounding the tip of Borneo for this purpose. What a shame. [:(]

Grotius is still not bombing anything with his Nells and Bettys. Clark Field is almost repaired now. Hopefully this will speed up the repairs on my planes there.

Here is a picture of his interdiction force off of Kuching.

I envy you for being able to operate out of japanese LBA umbrella. In our 3vs3 PBEM the japs quickly took Ambonia, and then Jolo putting some sever restrictions to allied surface operations in the area. Basicall limiting them to 5 or 6 hexes around bases able to provide heavy fighter cover.

The landings at Davao have begun. He only started unloading in the afternoon and already he has 7000 troops ashore.

He still has not spotted the Houston group or Doorman! Houston et. al. make their sprint into Davao harbor tonight. Tomorrow night will be Doorman's turn. Force Z will probably follow that with a bombardment. He may have an inkling of Force Z's position now. They ran into one of his subs 2 hexes out from Sorebaja and sunk it.

My biggest concerns right now are a) he has apparently moved some bombers into Kuching (that is what the roll over text says) and b) I don't know what he is doing with his carrier. As for (a), another Brewster scored in today's action and some more Zeros were destroyed on the ground. The airfield there is up to 36 damage. Not enough, but maybe it will lower their morale. But Force Z looks like it may be in a bad position come sun rise. That may be the case for Doorman and the Houston group too since on one side there is Kuching and on the other may be a carrier! So much for operating outside his air umbrella. [:(]

Supplies are running low at Balikpapan. I am flying in some and have another 2000 loaded on some APs about one day away.

He is still not bombing any of my airfields. I think he is solely focused on naval attacks. Clark Field is totally repaired now and hopefully my planes will repair rapidly now. Once I have some political points I want to pull out the B-17s followed by the fighters. Everybody will head for Java where we will hunker down. Still hope to pull some more Dutch troops off of worthless islands and bring them to Java as well. Only 30 PPs available right now, though. [:(]

What a night action! The Japanese surface forces accomplished their job of keeping my forces from hitting the transports, but they paid a very heavy price. I even sunk the Nagara. The combat replay took forever to watch. These guys just kept goin at each other. At first I was very concerned because my ships weren't shooting. In fact, I think the Japs surprised me on the first round. But once they started firing they did a good job. I think their night experience numbers were climbing during the engagement. They went from the 35 - 45 range to around 57 the next day.

But while the surface forces may have succeeded in keeping from hitting the transports this time, they are now non-existent. This means that Doorman, who will be running a bombardment into Davao tonight (he captured Davao during the day), will have a clean shot at the transports that are still unloading supplies. And still he has not sighted me! He apparently has moved search planes into Davao. 18 auxilaries are listed in the rollover text. But no fighters. Well, we'll see if we can't keep him from spotting me still. Between Doorman at night, and my B-17 groups stationed at Cagayan and which are going to launch an airfied attack during the day, we may be able to just shut that field down. (I also moved the P-40E fighter group from Clark Field to Cagayan to provide CAP should he decide he wants to bomb that field.)

My B-17s, btw, did a bang up job last turn with naval searches. 3 of his ships were reported hit by B-17s doing naval searches. What a wonderful way to gain experience. [:D]

I have a TF about ready to pull into Rangoon with over 15,000 tons of supply. The AVG is providing CAP. He has not spotted this convoy yet, however. He apparently does not have any scout planes at Tavoy, just fighters.

My bombing mission against Kuching went rather poorly this time. He has moved in Oscars and Sallys to Kuching. The Oscars ate my Brewsters for lunch. I lost something like 12 Brewsters. To beef up my woefully decimated escorts I flew in a sqdrn of Buffalos to Singkawang from Singapore. They are not going to do any better, but as long as his CAP is tangling with the escorts they are not hurting my bombers. Despite the fact that my Brewsters took it on the chin, only two Martins were shot down.

Force Z will follow Doorman into Davao tomorrow night unless it appears he has either spotted me or his transports should bug out.

Well this was the most depressing turn of the entire war.

Grotius moved his transports out of Davao for fear (correct of course) that I would try to hit it again. So all that Doorman ran into was a lone DD damaged in the previous night's engagement and struggling back to Davao where it could disband. Needless to say, it was sunk. Then Doorman goes ahead and bombards. My goodness! Last time I try to bombard a Jap base with the escorts! I DD sunk right away. Another was ready to sink, no doubt, and was caught by Nells during the daylight phase. Plus, his CVL and a CS join in the action on my retreating forces. They are at 5 hex range, so no torps. But who needs torps when Kates flying at 16,000 feet can land bombs on a moving ship. [X(]

Then he hits Clark Field with 60 [X(] Zeros and clouds of army bombers. 16 AC died on the field. [:(] And of course everybody in the air (which wasn't all that much) died as well. I took the surviving Tomahawks and moved them to Cagayan in preparation for bugging out of the PI altogether. Don't have enough PP's to move out everyone I would like to, but they are headed for the exit soon (I hope)

Over Kuching things went no better than usual. Oscars are killing me. This turn I am flying my bombers as high as I can (25,000+ feet). I would like to give them some more of a rest, but I want to keep that field hurting. The rollover now indicates 47 damage. Plus, I would like to continue eating into his supply. I think my TIVa's have him spooked. He doesn't seem to want to risk bringing in resupply ships just yet.

I fear that he may be getting ready to bomb Singapore in a big way. Unfortunate, since the AVG is currently in Rangoon providing CAP over a supply TF. He has 2 units about to march into Burma, 120 miles (2 hexes) from where I have 5 brigades defending the approaches to Rangoon. As soon as that supply unloads everybody is bugging out for Mandalay. Then the AVG head back to Singapore and perhaps Java.

One problem I am having in the DEI is lack of supply. I have some planes in my replacement pool, but not enough supply on Java to actually get the replacements. That should be fixed in about 3 or 4 turns. I have 3 TFs heading for Java right now that should get me the requisite supply. I am also going to risk a resupply mission to Singapore once that AVG is back there.

My B-17s at Cagayan are now on naval attack. If he can score from 16000 feet with Kates, maybe I can score from 6000. I doubt the heavies will go after his CS or CVL. In fact they will probably flying into some hornet's nest. But I want him to back off a little to allow Force Z, Dorman, and the Houston group time to get back to the Java sea. The Celebes sea is now off limits to my shipping.

I have fallen a day behind in this AAR.

Anyone following Grotius's version of this AAR is no doubt aware that Grotius got hit by a dissappearing unit bug. We decided to redo the turn to avoid this bug. Unfortunately, the redone turn didn't turn out as well for me as the original. In the original turn, the B-17s I had set to naval attack actually scored one hit on the CS Chitose and one on the CVL Ryujo. In the redone turn they got off clean. I also found that bombing Kuching from 25000+ feet did not save my bombers from his fighters or accomplish any damage. So for the redo we both agreed to a one day truce at Kuching while everybody rested their planes. The next turn I put the bombers at 12000 feet but they failed to fly because of weather. So no everybody is very well rested and hopefully there will be a very big strike against Kuching next turn.

My B-17 raid did put some fear into Grotius. It accomplished my main goal which was getting him to back off with his carrier and give my surface forces a chance to escape from the Celebes Sea. The Houston group and Doorman are heading to Sorebaja to rearm. Force Z is heading to Kendari to base there in anticipation for moves on Menado and Ambiona. It would seem that having destroyed his surface fleet at Davao has prompted him to reposition his BBs. I have several good spottings of his BB force heading east towards the PI. It looks like they are going to round the northern end of the PI and then head south to support operations in the Celebes. So it looks like Force Z will be meeting the Haruna et. al. again!

My B-17 raid also, as I expected, provoked an arial reaction. A moderate sized raid of Sallys and Zeros did some damage.

I still don't have enough Political points to get these guys out of there. So the B-17s are resting. Next turn both groups of B-17s will transfer to ABDA and fly to Palembang. From there they will participate in the raids on Kuching.

Oh, I should say that Kuching has had a two day respite now. Airfield damage is down to something like 25. I may be facing a raid from there this turn.

He has moved an awful lot of airpower onto the Maylay isthmus. I don't think he is going after Singapore yet. My guess is that he is going to bomb my troops at Kuala Lumpur. I would like to get the AVG back to Singapore, but they are still CAPing the TF unloading supplies at Rangoon. I have no idea where those supplies are going. Perhaps the various units in Burma are sucking them up. But the supply situation in Rangoon and the other bases connected to it by rail has not changed despite all the supplies unloaded so far. [:(]

My future plans are uncertain. After the Houston group and Doorman rearm, I will probably have one of them join up with Force Z. But I would also like to have some forces protecting Palembang and western Java. We will see how things develop. But it looks to me like he will be concentrating on the Celebes Sea for now.

Finally got off an attack on Kuching. But the planes from Balikpapan did not fly due to weather. That means that the Martins there have had three days of rest. It would seem to be suicide to attack him. I now watch the combat replays and discount any report that my plane is firing at his while assuming that every shot he takes is going to result in a kill. But the fighters are doing their job of protecting the bombers. Problem is I am going to run out of fighers. I am thinking of moving some P-40s over to Singkawang to help with the escort duty. I have a feeling they could do a lot better than the Dutch and British planes.

I had enough political points to move both groups of B-17s to the ABDA command this turn. They both flew out to Palembang where they will rest for a couple of turns before hitting Kuching. Of course, they left some damaged planes behind at Cagayan. Don't know how many of those will get out. To move out the P-40 Warhawks still left in the PI will cost over 100 political points and I am now back down to Zero. They may be eaten alive before I am able to get them out, but I would rather have them fly CAP and get experience than have them destroyed on the ground. This is my version of Darwinian evolution: the pilots that survive should have some good experience. [8|]

My plans now revolve around getting most of my fighters to Java where they can CAP my remaining naval forces. Those naval forces then will continue to try to interfere with his landings ala Davao in the game and Balikpapan in real life. I see my surface navy as key to my defense with my air assets' chief function being the protection of my ships. Eventually I envision all the air groups at Singapore flying to Java. Already all but one of my PI squadrons is now part of ABDA (with the exception of the PBYs and those crappy P-26s/36s) AVG is still at Rangoon, but should be back in Singapore within a turn or two.

Force Z is at Kendari. Houston, et. al. just rearmed at Sorebaja and are now heading to Kendari. Doorman is heading to Sorebaja to rearm. Where he will be stationed next I don't yet know.

Supply is beginning to arrive in Java. Hopefully I will have some replacement planes soon. There are some in the pool. I just need the supply to get them out.

Another turn of bombing Kuching. All his planes destroyed were on the ground: 4 Zeros, 2 Sallys, 1 Oscar. Everybody is going to rest this turn in preparation for reshuffling to new bases next turn. I may move some P-40s to Singkawang. I am certainly taking the beat up fighter squadrons located there out and moving them to Java. I am almost up to the magic 20,000 supplies points needed to get replacement planes for my ABDA forces.

The AVG flew back to Singapore this turn. Unfortunately, it left behind 23 plane being repaired at Rangoon. Not enough based support there to keep the entire fighter group flying. It will be a while before they are all back together. [:(] I will probably move the buffalos out of Singapore to Java and leave the AVG to defend that base.

Still no air action in Malaya. He is resting somewhat, obviously. But I think he is simply waiting until his ground units are ready to advance into Kuala Lumpur as a group and then start bombing my ground units. We shall see.

Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes. Accidentally left some Hudson's on airfield attack. They got mauled. I watched the replay and hoped that they would abort the mission after 1 or two kills. But no, these huckleberrys are just about the only people on the map with high morale. They still have high morale. I think they are in the wrong airforce. These guys were obviously born to be Kamikazes.

Normally I am rather carefull about this kind of thing. It should be even easier in this smaller scenario to catch this, yet such mistakes can still be made. I find it incredible that all these people working on new version of the GC want to add MORE units to this already oversized game. Why isn't someone working on deleting China and Russia so we have LESS to deal with?

Flying my Warhawks at Cagayan also proved to be a mistake. I lost at least 12 valuable aircraft. I suppose I could have lost them on the ground as well (actually, I did lose one or two on the ground). But I think they are safer on the ground than in the air. Well, he cut them down to a size where I could pay to get them out of the PI this turn. They are now at Kendari (all 15 of them) CAPing my fleet there.

Got some replacement planes in ABDA finally. I kinda messed up though. Some of those replacements went to planes that I wanted to move this turn. So now there are a bunch of damaged planes sitting on airfields where I don't want them and where I would like to move someone else in.

I have decided to evacuate Kuala Lumpur. I am going to concentrate at Malacca. I may bug out of there as well.

Well, we are going to see what B-17s can do against Kuching. (if they fly, that is) This is a very dicey raid I have planned. The Martins are supposed to fly from Balikpapan. Blenheims and Hudsons are supposed to fly from Singapore. 1 group of B-17s is supposed to fly from Palembang (the other group is still resting). And the escort of P-40Bs is supposed to fly from Singkawang. Who knows if this will work? The P-40s just transfered from Balikpapan to Singkawang, so they are somewhat fatigued. So if they do fly, they may not do very well. Correction, they won't do well no matter what, but I got to try. [8|] Heck, they may not fly at all, delivering up my bombers to the slaughter. [:(]

His ground attack missions in Malaya are flying with minimal escort. I don't know if he will keep this up. But I am thinking about LRCAPing my boys with the AVG to give him a bloody nose. On the other hand, he may be trying to draw me off in just this way to hit me with a large escort of Oscars, or to bomb Singapore when it doesn't have any CAP. We'll see.

One of my units that I told to move out of Kuala Lumpur didn't move. Perhaps his ground attack mission aborted their move. Anyway, they are going to get whacked this turn by his ground units that just moved in. [:(] Hopefully the other 3 units, which have moved 45 miles won't have their movement aborted and will make it to Malacca before he attacks.

I believe he is headed for Menado next. He could be going for Ambiona, but I think he is too cautious for that. I am sure he wants his LBA to support his invasion. For the same reason I don't believe he will be going for Tarakan just yet. I suppose he could go for Jolo, but I really don't care. Doorman is presently at Sorebaja. Just rearmed and refueld so will probably not be participating in this action. Besides, I would like to have a reserve to react to any unexpected moves around Singkawang or Palembang. I am sure Palembang will get his attention this turn if the B-17s fly. I am thinking of moving Doorman to Batavia. Or perhaps Balikpapan.

Well, as I said, this was going to be a difficult raid to coordinate and that was precisely what happened. My planes from 3 different bases flew, but not my fighters from Singkawang. [:(] Sheep to the slaughter.

Also, like I thought, my lone unit in Kuala Lumpur got whacked pretty good. I am having him march to Singapore to recover while the rest of the units will stay in Malacca and see if we can't hold him off for a little bit. My forts in Singapore are about 67% of the way to level 7.

The supply situation in Malaya is not too bad yet. But just in case I am sending in a supply convoy. I am also interested in seeing if he will try to attack this convoy. I actually would like to provoke a naval air attack against a base covered by the AVG. I want to see them earn their pay and live up to their reputation.

Well, I went into Kuching again this turn and this time my P-40s out of Singkawang actually flew. But they took one casualty and then bugged out. I didn't realize their morale was so low. Funny thing though: even after the combat animation said their were 0 fighters left, they suddenly came alive and started shooting down some Oscars. Shot down three of them after they supposedly broke off. Well at any rate I am having everybody stand down this turn for some R&R. But I will be back next turn and I am going to try lowering the altitude to 6000 feet to see if I can get some better results. I can only hope that the flak is not too bad.

Grotius did another lightly escorted ground attack in Malaya. I am very tempted to LRCAP my ground units with the AVG. I found out where all those ships are going: Cagayan. Don't know why he decided on a landing rather than just walking from Davao. The CD guns really cost him a bunch of casualties. He didn't bother to bombard, either. Perhaps he is saving his ammo for bigger fish?
