I like the detail of HOI2, but I prefer the turn-based style of GGWaW. To be honest, for me the "dream game" would be a global-WW2 game with GGWaW's turn-based styole and HOI2 (or WITP's) detail.
You can also just pause HOI to you heart's content

If one wants to draw comparisions, I think it is the scale and scope of the game that is the vital difference. WaW can have a decent AI because the game mechanics in WaW are fairly simple. There are vastly fewer countries and options in WaW, so it makes for a cleaner game to implement and model. It also makes it a lot easier to balance the combat and understand the different 'fronts' it must defend. It would be hard to implement WaW at the scope of HOI. WaW already is a massive resource hog, imagine that playing a full world scenario with about 20x the provinces. I don't even want to think about unit production or supply at that scale
Not all things scale easily and some games are just right at a certain size. I think WaW hit that just fine.

I'm glad that both games are very different. I hate clones. It would have be a pity if matrix tried to copy HOI. Fortunately, WAW is original. And thanks matrix, it's turns based !
