I ran a game "continuous head to head Auto upgrades on" through 1/10/42. I should have stopped it at 12/31 but I didn't (I was spending quality time with my wife over dinner). The game I ran was a game I had already been playing as Japan vs AI so I probably had pushed a couple of buttons.
The Nell plant at Gumma did upgrade to Bettys. Apparently without damage (it is size 20 and is undamaged on 1/10 so it couldn't have been damaged on 1/1, right?_
The Claude plant at Nagasaki did _not_ upgrade.
I had set both plants to Halt but hadn't expanded either.
Anyone have any brilliant insight as to what happened? Perhaps I had touched the upgrade path for Claudes? But I had also upgraded some Nells to Bettys.
Anyhow, some upgrades are still sometimes automatic (there is a "jello-like observation") but I can't tell which is why as it were.
Perhaps the factories have to be actually working when the change occurs, or perhaps after running those factories for a turn, even after that date, the change will occur that way too.
I don't know whether the factories are active or not would make any difference, but my guess is the factories will change on one date, and one date alone. The thing about the A5M4 though is probably sort of screwed up because the game starts out with it's logical successor already producing. There's no reason for the programmer to make A5M4 factories to convert to A6M2's if the latter is already producing. Maybe the intent would be that the A5M4's could be switched manually since they are of small cost, or they can pick up on an upgrade factory switch for free when the A6M2 successor comes out (A6M3?).

I pasted this from another thread... MW posted about the middle of March. I don't recall seeing anything that contradicts it. I would think that such a change would have been included in the patch notes.

Yes, they do. Considered changing that, but in the end, left it as it is.

Hi, Well my advise remains as always. Go with what Mike says. I just began 2 new PBEM games so I will let you know as soon as I see results one way or the other. If the factories upgrade dispite my intent I will have to change my intent.

Auto-converts are of little issue if the main case for being worried about it is the Sonia line. If there is nothing later, as I think is the case, then there's nothing that will interfere with any of the Sonia line changes is my guess. Everytime a line would have a new a/c come along, however, I would imagine that the problem of the older things upgraded would exist.
Of course if turning the factories off stops the auto-convert, assuming they wouldn't auto-convert after the conversion date, once turned on, that would certainly help all the way around. It would be nice to know if turning the factories off on the date would help.

Factories still auto upgrade the way they did before. I loaded scenario 13 .. switched 2 factories to obsolete models. 1 Ki-51 factory to Ki-30 and the Ki-54 Hickory factory to Ki-59 Theresa. Ran 1 turn and checked them. These 2 factories had switched themselves back to Ki-51 and Ki-54, respectively.

That answers whether they will switch back immediately or not, irrespective of the implementation of the new model. I wonder if turning them off will help? I'm guessing, that when they are turned back on, the following turn will see them upgraded again. Still something has to give or this choose your own plane bit has been in vain. Seems that the intent was only to make the old aircraft available to downgrade individual groups, and NOT to give you a functional factory production switching.

If factories auto-upgrade as before, i think they did it correctly.
The goal of the feature was to let players choose different upgrade paths. Not to allow using older aircrafts.
There are very few examples (maybe sonia is the only one) where using the old plane is better than new one (IMO less worth than all the time/supplies you lose if you have to manually upgrade any factory).
Btw, if auto upgrade of factories is turned off, what can AI do when you play versus AI?

So as I understand this then:
Factories (except for that Claude Factory which may have some bug in it) do still auto-upgrade. That means I can change a factory from producing one kind of current plane (a bomber, say, perhaps a Betty) to another kind of current plane (An A6M2) and it will stay an A6M2 factory.
But I can't change the Betty factory to a Nell Factory (an older model) because the game engine will see the Nell, see there is a newer model which can currently be produced in that upgrade line, and immediately (when the turn is run) switch the factory from Nell to Betty.
But you _can_ set a factory to do rd on a future plane (a Jill say). I see several of my factories doing rd just fine.
And I gather none of that really changed.
What did change is only the upgrades of Air Groups (not the production of Aircraft). I can set my Air Group to upgrade to any aircraft in that current line (a flying boat search plane if it currently is a flying boat search plane) with the following two restrictions: a) there is a sort of nationality/service limit. IE the Commonwealth stuff tends to stay Commonwealth etc. and b) I can only choose a plane "one step ahead" in the chain of upgrades.
That seems consistent with what I have seen so far (given the Nagasaki Claude Factory glitch. Me, I don't think that's a bug. I suspect there is political corruption involved. The factory owner is probably paying bribes to someone to let him keep producinig old style planes and sell them to the government. Happens all the time in Real Life).

Haven't tested it myself, but lots or factories expected to upgrade automagically on mm/01/yy wait a few days in my experience, and this might be an explanation for it. Anyone want to test it? I am kinda busy IRL and trying to enter my turn 1 for a new PBEM (when at home).

Of course you need 300,000 supply to repair a 300 plane factory from completely damaged to completely operational. That was not what I meant. (plus 10k supply minimum to repair)
I meant that it takes 10,000 supply before any repair can occur. If the game detects a base with less than 10,000 supply, it might skip the routine that would otherwise convert the factory without damage. Therefore, until the base accumulates 10k supply, it might not convert the factory. It is a theory to explain what no one else has been able to explain - when and why factories slated to upgrade on the first day of a month sometimes linger unconverted for several days.
To put it in simple terms for you "hexgod", the code might be like this:
if (base->supply > 10000){
///... other code
if (factory->produces->upgradedate <= gamedate){
//upgrade factory
}

Well I think you can recommend all you wish. I am fairly certain we have seen the last patch (or at least from Matrix). Someone will take over the code Im sure (a la Steel Panthers).
