Interestingly enough, Holst finished Mars; Bringer of War, and it was first performed in the same year that the First World War broke out, 1914.

I think many discerning people saw a major conflict in the making in 1914 and before. I did research on that some years ago - a lot of research, matter of fact. I came to a simple conclusion: Europeans wanted their dirty war, they wanted it pretty badly despite all the talk to the contrary. They were aching to start one - I also came away from the research convinced that if Germany had not marched first, it could as easily have been France. Just a sidebar and no, I don't know how that got into a discussion of war movie music.

Oh ... someone wrote that I revealed a background in "classical" music. I don't classify it that way. Many great musicians, including Verdi and Debussey, have said there are only two kinds of music: Good and bad. Charbrier made a great joke on that statement, but you kinda have to know composers and eras to get it.

This really IS drifting off topic, so I will cut that out right now.

Being a child of the Sixties, I especially liked the soundtrack that accompanied the Viet Nam films of the '70s and '80s. "The End" by The Doors during the opening credits of "Apocalypse Now" creates a dark and sinister mood that sets up the movie perfectly.
